In the state of Hidalgo the Coordinated Services of Public Health have developed a program for IDD eradication directed particularly at 5 communities with low iodine levels that have a combined population of 179,000 inhabitants, of whom 20% are women of childbearing age and 49% are less than 15 years old.
A seminar in Misiones gathered together national and local government officials to emphasize the importance of IDD and to introduce a plan for its elimination.
Of 146 samples collected in 1993 in Misiones and Asuncion, (82% fine salt, 18% coarse), 77% of the fine salt had adequate iodine (greater than 20 ppm) but 73% of the coarse salt did not contain iodine.
