Topic: Mislead

Spinsanity - The liberal who cried wolf
The Mislead is a new project of the increasingly influential liberal organization MoveOn.org, which claims to reach more than two million activists and recently received a donation of up to $5 million from philanthropist George Soros, who is working to prevent President Bush's re-election.
The Daily Mislead's website claims that it provides "an accurate daily chronicle for journalists of misrepresentations, distortions and downright misleading statements by President Bush and the Bush Administration," but in most cases since its first issue on September 15, 2003, it has done nothing of the kind.
And in perhaps the biggest stretch of all, the October 24 Mislead implied that a Bush pledge to crack down on corporate leaders who violate the public trust was broken by an internal memo at military contractor Haliburton, which is obviously not proof of deception by the administration.

washingtonpost.com: Some Abstinence Programs Mislead Teens, Report Says
Those and other assertions are examples of the "false, misleading, or distorted information" in the programs' teaching materials, said the analysis, released yesterday, which reviewed the curricula of more than a dozen projects aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.
In providing nearly $170 million next year to fund groups that teach abstinence only, the Bush administration, with backing from the Republican Congress, is investing heavily in a just-say-no strategy for teenagers and sex.
But youngsters taking the courses frequently receive medically inaccurate or misleading information, often in direct contradiction to the findings of government scientists, said the report, by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), a critic of the administration who has long argued for comprehensive sex education.

 Botox ads Mislead
Approved since 1989 for eye muscle disorders, and used for years ``off-label'' to freeze wrinkles, Botox was officially approved by the FDA in April for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe brow furrows.
The FDA said a brochure stating, ``It seems like everybody is talking about Botox Cosmetic, the highly effective, non-surgical procedure that can dramatically reduce your toughest wrinkle within 7 days,'' misleads because it does not state that the effect is temporary.
The FDA also said Allergan was misleading consumers with statements like, ``If doing all you can to look your best is important to you, Botox Cosmetic may be for you,'' because they do not clearly define the age range it is approved for.

 Tweed's share offer 'meant to mislead' - Business - Business - theage.com.au
Melbourne stockbroker David Tweed meant to mislead shareholders when he offered to buy their shares in aged care provider Aevum at five times below market price, a court has heard.
He said the letter placed as little emphasis as possible on representing fair value, at a time when the value of shareholders' assets were poised to increase.
Counsel for Mr Tweed, Geoff Lindsay, SC, said Mr Tweed had acted within the law and the offer had a warning that it should be read in its entirety, as well as suggesting recipients seek independent advice.
