There may be various reasons why plants from several different evolutionary lines chose this striking way of heterotrophy.
An obviuos one is presented by the epiphytic members of Santalales (Eremolepidaceae, Misodendraceae, some Santalaceae, Loranthaceae, and Viscaceae), where parasitism secures (at least) a steady supply of water for the parasite.
Another evolutionary advantage is conveyed by the ability of parasitic plants to spend larger proportions of their life cycle on reproduction than their hosts.

Members of Viscaceae, the family of holiday cheer in North America and Europe, seem to have arisen from just one of these origins.
A different origin gave rise to a family called Misodendraceae, Nickrent suggests.
This family's scaly sprigs jut out of the branches of South American beech trees, and in blooming season, the female plants of several species grow silky blonde hair—swinging whisks of yellow filaments several inches long.

Some of you liked my "goblin" focus at Hallowe'en, so I thought I would do a similar bit for this page as well.
Mistletoe ("turd on a twig") is the common name for a group of parasitic plants (Eremolepidaceae, Loranthaceae, Misodendraceae, and Viscaceae) that live by attaching to trees or shrubs and drawing nutrients from the sap.
Sometimes called a "vampire plant," the mistletoe sucks water, minerals and sugars from its host.
