The first time you sit down to the original content of Misplaced Childhood, it might seem difficult to get through, due to the heavier lyrical content as well as the fact there are no breaks between the songs.
One would tend to think that Misplaced Childhood could only be made better with the inclusion of some singles and the original demo version of the album.
But hearing the entire Misplaced Childhood album in two very similar forms back to back does get to be on the tedious side, even with a slightly modified track order and one piece cut from the final work.

Fish regales his loss of innocence, indeed the loss of all childhood innocence.
Contains the hit "Kayleigh", which is probably the limit of what most people have heard of this talented band, if even that.
I'm not a big fan of "White Feather", which concludes the CD -- the song is ok, but it really doesn't fit into the rest of the album, and I find myself hitting "stop" to avoid it.

The whole band was at their creative highlight in 1985, and both the music and the lyrics on Misplaced Childhood are among the best they've ever done.
Misplaced rendezvous segues into Windswept thumb which in its way is an intro to the next song on the album.
Once again very ambiguous this could be either about his experiences during this acid trip (or after consuming the pills and alcohol at the end of Mylo) while at the same time it could be about being a little child, taking the perimeter walk across the fence in front of the house.

In classic "prog" fashion, MISPLACED CHILDHOOD is a concept album in which all the tracks run together in a seamless whole.
It is recordings like this one, made some ten years after the heydays of it progenitors, that give me continued faith in the future of the genre.

It is interesting to note there is a vastly higher probability of Dream Theater playing a song live from the Misplaced Childhood album than there is of Marillion doing so in the near future.
For those interested, Fish did do all of Misplaced Childhood with his band in 2002 for the fan club which was later released as part of his Fools Company DVD.
Mark Wilkinson moves into full-on airbrushing on the "Return to Childhood" artwork this week and he will be using the original model for the MC sleeve artwork, Robert Mead, as the main subject in his new exploration of the piece twenty years on.

It was released in 1987 and was the last album before the lead singer Fish left the band.
Although commercially not quite as successful as its 1985 predecessor Misplaced Childhood, it is considered to be among the best work of Marillion's "Fish era" by many (including Fish himself, as he has stated in several interviews).
In 1999 a 2-CD 'Remastered Version' with additional B-sides and demos was released, with detailed liner notes from all of the original members including Fish.

I was introduced to Marillion in the mid 80's, Misplaced Childhood being the initial album I heard.
Not only do you get the great album Misplaced Childhood you get the B-sides to the singles, something Marillion has been known for, but you get demo recordings and alternate mixes.
Misplaced Childhood shows a wide expanse of emotions experienced during the long tour for the previous album Fugazi.

I really couldn't get into Brave, and while Misplaced Childhood is good I wouldn't herald it as one of the best albums of all time the way you do.

’s Misplaced Childhood brought back how special this record was to me. As I credit Kiss’s Ace Frehley with inspiring me to learn the guitar, Marillion was the start of my interest and ultimate conversion to a progressive fan.
Of course, I had a few Yes and Pink Floyd albums in the collection by the time I heard Marillion, but it was more of a classic rock thing than actually being aware of progressive as a genre of rock music.
It is not to lessen the bands other works, but something cuts through on Misplaced Childhood as a whole.

You get the feeling, though, that Smith would do himself more justice if he were more personal with this opening material as opposed to the stark contrasts he exploits for laughs.
Yes I'm fully aware that it is a comedy show, but the path of childhood influence is well-trodden and certainly not unusual on this year’s fringe, so would need to be fashioned as opposed to stood up and left.
This said Smith does have a rare world view, I've never met a Marillion fan before, I have, however, met music enthusiasts before so the interview set up with Marillion's front man Fish was expected.
