The Miss Australia Awards was a major fundraising initiative of the Spastic Centres of Australia and raised considerable funds to help bridge the gap between available government funding and actual costs of services for children and adults with cerebral palsy.
The Miss Australia Awards was sponsored and organised from 1954 until the early 1960s by the lingerie manufacturer, Hickory, until Dowd Associates transferred the ownership to the Australian Cerebral Palsy Association in 1963.
The Miss Australia Awards was about celebrating the success of young Australian women, and unmarried men since the early 1990s, and operated as a forum where individuals could achieve their potential both personally and professionally, whilst making a contribution to the lives of people with disabilities.
