 Marvel Comics Reviews
I'm a relatively newcomer to the Marvel universe, having always held comics (indie x's, graphic novels, or otherwise) at arm's length because I have a lot of distaste for the choppy, uber soap opera nature of the pulp form.
Gaiman uses the characters of the Marvel universe in unique and interesting ways and it is apparent that he knows the time period well, as he is able to bring true historical facts into the piece.
The 1980's were strange times for the Uncanny X-Men- the team was being led by their former arch foe, Magneto; their headmaster was in space as consort to an alien princess; and every member of the original team had left the group.

 Brightness Reef Review
Briefly, the main premise of the "Uplift" universe is that all sapient races were "uplifted" to intelligence by genetic modifications performed by an older "Patron" race, in a genealogical sequence stretching back millions of years to the fabled Progenitors.
The alliances seem to differ on such issues as permissible degrees of genetic alteration of clients (some Patrons unethically modify their clients for excessive servility, for instance), proper length of indenture periods, and degree of respect (or worship) for the (long-disappeared) Progenitors.
Brightness Reef is the latest of David Brin`s "Uplift" series of novels, which began with his first novel, Sundiver, originally published in 1980.

He received a degree in international business and economics from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1980, mostly by correspondence, and he put his knowledge to work.
As he posed, muscles rippling, astride the world of bodybuilding, his eyes already were focused on other worlds to conquer.
But others who were part of that world say he self-medicated earlier and more often, popping dianabol and taking primobolan injections, two forms of steroids.

Amazon.com: DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore (DC Comics): Books: Alan Moore
In addition to these runs, Moore wrote a number of "guest stories" for various DC characters in the mid-1980's and that is the subject of this new trade paperback.
The works in DC's newly assembled collection of these stories (all previously available in various collections and put together for the first time here) don't possess the same momentousness as those titles but still provide an interesting side of Moore's oeuvre.
The creature puts Superman into a world where his greatest heart's wishes come true...he is back on Krypton which was not destroyed and has his own family including a son...a son who he has to painfully tell good bye to in order to fight off the effects of the creature.

Amazon.com: Books: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Written by Douglas Adams, "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" was first published in 1980 and is the second instalment of his legendary five-part "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy.
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe begins where The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy left off, only Zaphod Beeblebrox's idea of stopping for dinner at the aforementioned restaurant is delayed a bit (or an incredibly long bit, depending on your upcoming temporal location).
While The Restaurant at the End of the Universe isn't quite as amazing as its predecessor, this is only because its predecessor was so amazingly original and different from everything that came before it.

Sime~Gen:Background on Zhag and Tonyo by Jean Lorrah
Sime~Gen (tm) is the trademark of a fictional universe (c) copyright by Jacqueline Lichtenberg, 1969,1974, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, now copyright by Sime~Gen Inc.
Not only may the universe develop in such a way that some of what could happen if a Zhag/Tonyo novel were written today could not if it were written five years from now, but much of this simply won't belong in any professional story written about them.
But he also has his disinterest in money reinforced as Carla turns him down at that time, not ready to turn her daughters' lives inside out any more than their father's death has done.

I'm thrilled to be able to offer a timeline for an entirely different kind of captain from the late 1980's--namely, The Captain N Timeline, written by Mark Moore.
The Captain Power Timeline, by Rebecca Lovett, is a good guide to events in the series itself, and it has an explanation for the uninitiated of the dating system, but it seems a little bare in general.

BBC News SCI/TECH Universe 'proven flat'
The research backs the inflation theory of the Universe put forward in 1980, which suggests that the whole of the cosmos expanded from a single tiny point at the Big Bang.
However, the Universe's expansion has been so great that space has now been stretched to the point that it is essentially flat.
Another result of the study is the prediction that the Universe will continue its steady expansion, which started at the Big Bang, and will not collapse into a "Big Crunch".

In the story, Heinlein's protagonist David MacKinnon is by occupation an English Literature Professor--immediately a tip-off of the author's viewpoint, given Heinlein's expressed disdain for some practitioners of that occupation [See, the essay "Who Are The Heirs of Patrick Henry: Afterword" republished in Expanded Universe (1980); see also: the character of Clyde Leamer in Cp.

Beam's Doorway - The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang theory of the origin and evolution of the universe began to develop major problems throughout the 1970's and 1980's as new astronomical observations became inconsistent with more and more of its theoretical underpinnings: generally, the astronomical observations simply did not square with a system controlled only by gravitational forces.
Gravity acting on matter of this density, the so-called "critical density," eventually would cause a universe like this to begin falling back on itself; at last, in pure collapse, the entire universe would revert to a single point of nearly infinite density and heat.
According to such theory, when the temperature of the universe dropped to 3,000°K, at about 300,000 years ago after Big Bang, protons and electrons combined to form helium.
