LGBT characters in the Star Trek universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) all the major characters were officially heterosexual, but fans debated what was the unofficial sexual orientation of three characters based on story-lines, portrayals, and dialogue in certain episodes.
The last season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999) had an episode titled "Field of Fire" in which Dax, now in the body of a new female host, has to track down a Vulcan murderer on the space station.
As was the case with the Star Trek The Next Generation episode titled "The Outcast" (1992), the "alternative" sexual orientation is brought onto the Enterprise (as we all know that all humans are heterosexual in the franchise) by a new alien race (never to be seen again).

 Michael Frayn
And Headlong (1999), justly shortlisted for the Booker Prize, was a dazzling account of a young would-be art historian's accidental discovery of what he takes to be a missing Bruegel masterpiece.
What emerges is a genuine spiritual affinity between the two writers: like his mentor, Frayn is a dramatist who sees comedy as the perfect vehicle with which to explore the gap between the vast, mysterious universe and our own sad, hilarious and often futile attempts to impose our private structure upon it.
Even Frayn's translations relate to his own central preoccupation: our attempts, through perception and language, to impose a structure on a vast universe in which we are merely circumstantial specks.

The idea is to find presentations of knot theory, or of some mild generalizations of knot theory, in terms of finitely many generators and relations, and then to construct a universal finite type invariant by setting its values on the generators so as the relations are satisfied.
