Roman Missal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roman Missal (in Latin, Missale Romanum) is the liturgical book that contains the texts and rubrics for the celebration of the Mass in the Roman Rite of the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope Gregory IX considered, but did not put into effect, the idea of extending this missal, as revised by the Franciscans, to the whole Church; and in 1277 Pope Nicholas II ordered it to be accepted in all churches in the city of Rome.
Implementing the Council’s decision, Pope Pius V promulgated on 14 July 1570 an edition of the Roman Missal that was to be in obligatory use throughout the Latin Church except where there was a traditional liturgical rite that could be proved to be of at least two centuries’ antiquity.

These missals combine liturgical texts from the Prayer Book with supplementary materials such as prayers, ceremonial directions, and scripture lessons for various occasions that may not be included in the Prayer Book.
The ceremonial directions of the American Missal were not intended to contradict the Prayer Book rubrics, but the directions of the American Missal conformed the liturgy to "the common tradition of Western Catholic Christendom" when no definite provision was required, or when alternate usage was allowed.
A revised edition of the American Missal was published in 1951 by Earle Hewitt Maddux of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Missal later had at least two subsequent French owners before returning to England sometime after 1785; in 1797, it was purchased by George Mills, who had homes in Gloucestershire and St Kitts in the West Indies.

 Paul VI   Roman Missal Revised
The "Missale Romanum" was promulgated in 1570 by our predecessor St. Pius V, in execution of the decree of the Council of Trent.[1] It has been recognized by all as one of the many admirable results that the Council achieved for the benefit of the entire Church of Christ.
Accordingly many have had the desire for these doctrinal and spiritual riches not to be stored away in the dark, but to be put into use for the enlightenment of the mind of Christians and for the nurture of their spirit.
When he promulgated the "editio princeps" of the Roman Missal, our predecessor St. Pius V offered it to the people of Christ as the instrument of liturgical unity and the expression of a pure and reverent worship in the Church.

Roman Missal is the book containing all the fixed and changeable prayers and readings for the conduct of Roman Catholic Masseses.
This practice also advanced the habit of standardization of the Roman Rite by breaking down some local customs; the Franciscans chose the Calendar of Saints as celebrated in the city of Rome rather than adapting their celebrations to the calendar of each diocese in which they operated.
In 1570, having concluded the revision entrusted to the Pope by the Council of Trent, Pope Pius V published and promulgated a version of the Roman Missal which was to become mandatory for almost all of the Roman Catholic Church belonging to the Latin Rite.

The missals' justification was that they applied the Western use to the Anglican liturgy.
In the old missals, the language of the Roman Missal was translated into the language of the prayer book.
The old Anglican missals applied the Roman Missal order of worship to the BCP texts, rearranging elements (more drastically, to be sure, in the English Missal, where the need was greater) to conform to the Western use.

THIRD EDITIO TYPICA OF THE ROMAN MISSAL
The third editio typica of the Roman Missal is certainly a gift, offered to the particular Churches of the Roman Rite by the Holy See and especially by the Holy Father, with the guarantee of authenticity or, essentially, fidelity to the traditio inherited from his predecessors who passed it on to the next generations.
In the section of Masses for various intentions two formulas from the pre-conciliar Missal have been inserted; the first is a new formula taken from the editio typica of 1962 in which it was titled: To ask for compunction of heart that was added to the section of the Masses for the remission of sins.
In this case one can detect in the new Missal the sense of traditio, which does not ignore any previous form of the liturgy which is authentically Roman, because most of these prayers over the people were taken from the 1962 Missal and others from the elegant and rich formulas of the ancient Sacramentaries.

Made for Sherborne Abbey in Dorset between 1400-1407, the Missal is the supreme English masterpiece of book painting of its age and the only late mediaeval monastic book of such stature to have survived the Reformation intact.
The Missal contains a whole gallery of images within its 694 pages, with its lavishly decorated margins peopled by kings, nobles, bishops, monks, saints and angels in a celestial throng and, most unexpected of all, a choir of the native birds of the British Isles each with its name in Middle English.
The Sherborne Missal represented an important statement of political and religious affiliation and patronage, as well as a work in praise of God, and as such is a major historical document as well as a stunning work of art.
