Missinaibi River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Missinaibi River is a river in northern Ontario, Canada, which flows northeast from Missinaibi Lake north of Chapleau, Ontario and empties into the Moose River, which empties into James Bay.
A number of trading posts were built along the river in the late 18th century and the fur trade continued until the late 19th century.
The river's name means "pictured waters" in the Cree language which is thought to refer to the pictographs found on rock faces along the river.

The Missinaibi River barely has time to catch its breath between tales of historic relevance, comic relief, tragedy and joy I've been a recipient of these chronicles and fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to look deeper into the character of the Missinaibi, wherein lay a message for us all.
When the number of deaths along the river corridor were brought to the attention of the Toronto Star, who did a front-page feature entitled "Missinaibi -- River of Death" in the spring of 1994, and the Ontario Coroner's office, it precipitated a chain reaction through all levels of provincial and federal governments.
And as a Native rock-painting often conveys a deep lesson to the respectful observer, a river -- this river -- exemplifies the wisdom of the journey beyond what is visually apparent.

 Adventures of Robert Mullen
The Harricana, along with the Missinaibi, is considered one of the finest wilderness whitewater rivers in eastern Canada.
The Harricana was not an important fur trade river like the Missinaibi, so there are not the ancient portage trails at the rapids, and the Missinaibi is now a Provincial Park, with signs for campsites and portages; there are none of those amenities on the Harricana.
The river was clearly swollen, with some dangerous hydraulics in the normally grade II rapid.

A trip on Northern Ontario's Missinaibi River is an expedition considered to rival the greatest canoe trips in North America.
The river flows north for some 300 miles, beginning at the divide between the Atlantic and Arctic Watersheds and runs through Canadian Shield wilderness and the boreal forest, to empty into the sub-arctic waters of James Bay.
A 40-mile mid-section of the river allows for a family paddle trip that culminates with the canyons of Thunderhouse Falls, where the entire river is forced through a narrow rock gorge before it crashes off the Canadian Shield on to the Hudson Bay Lowlands.

With the Missinaibi River data set, a 20-year moving mean may represent too excessive an adjustment to provide a reliable indication of the presence or absence of a long-term trend.
The annual flow pattern of the Missinaibi River is similar to that of other unregulated northern Ontario rivers that are located at approximately the same longitude and latitude.

Missinaibi is generally rendered from Ojibway as “pictured waters”, a reference to ancient rock paintings concentrated beside Missinaibi Lake near its headwaters.
However, the river still held powerful attractions as a historic fur trade route connecting interior trapping grounds with Hudson Bay, besides being a waterway that still existed much as the early European explorers and traders had found it.
The river was now in a “pool-drop” phase where sections of flat water alternated with stunning falls where the only safe passage was a portage trail.
