Mission Santa Barbara was the tenth of the California missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans.
The water was led to the Mission by an aqueduct, the water flowing by gravity.

Mission Canyon is a census-designated place and an unincorporated suburb of Santa Barbara, California, in Santa Barbara County, United States.
The canyon itself is one of the most dramatic in the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the locally highest peak (La Cumbre Peak, 3985') at the top of the watershed, and rugged sandstone formations, partially covered with chaparral, on both sides of the creek.
California State Route 192 (Foothill Road) bisects the southern portion of the area, running from east to west, and Mission Canyon Road passes through the area from north to south.

Portions of that are still used by the city of Santa Barbara but, for the purposes of just touring around the area of the Mission, take a left U-turn as you exit the cemetery and about a half block up the street you'll notice a portion of the original aqueduct.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the California landmark sign so I'll have to add that on a later trip.
