Mission Dolores, or, to give it its proper title, the Mission San Francisco de Assisi, was the sixth of 21 missions founded on the California coast by Franciscans from Mexico.
The basilica close by the mission dates from 1918; an earlier church was, unlike the mission, destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.

As two 20 year old girls arriving in San Fran with nothing but a vauge apprehension about the 'quality' of the Mission district in which the Elements hostel is situated, we were quite nervy when we got off the metro nearest to where the hostel was and started walking up Mission Street to find it.
People call the Mission district 'colourful' and 'vibrant' but to be honest, it is rather edgy and a bit scary.
The hostel is situated on 24th and mission in the mission district which is very "latin" orientated (which we loved) and also a place where alot of artists hang out.

Snuggled on a 46½-square-mi tip of land between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco is a relatively small city of about 750,000 residents.
San Franciscans cherish the city, partly for the same reasons so many visitors do: the proximity of the bay and its pleasures, rows of Victorian homes clinging precariously to the hillsides, the sun setting behind the Golden Gate Bridge.
But a walk down the Filbert Steps or through Macondray Lane or an hour gazing at murals in the Mission or the thundering Pacific from the cliffs of Lincoln Park can be equally inspiring.
