  California Mission History: La Purisima Concepción
Mission La Purisima was founded December 8, 1787, at the site of the present town of Lompoc.
After the Indian uprising of 1824 the mission declined, and ten years later was in the hands of the secular administrator.
Today La Purisima is a State Historic Park of 967 acres, and unique in that rangers and docents recreate mission life as at no other site making it the most completely restored mission in California.

The Mission prospered until the earthquake of 1812, during which not only did almost all of the buildings fall, but a huge crack broke into the hillside at the back of the mission, flooding and destroying even the ruins.
After it’s third reconstruction, Mission La Purísima Concepción became self-sustainable, and enjoyed such prosperity that it’s herds were numbered in the tens of thousands, and the grounds included such buildings as large warehouses, a flsmith’s shop, weaving rooms, a mill, and bakery, pottery, and carpentry shops.
The natives controlled the mission for almost a month, until Mexican soldiers sent by the governor ended the standoff in a three hour battle, resulting in seventeen dead (sixteen of which were natives) and many wounded.

The extraordinary and horrible earthquake, which this Mission suffered on the memorable day of the glorious Apostle St. Thomas, entirely destroyed the church and vestry, buried under the walls the various images and paintings, and ruined the greater part of the furniture.
One hundred houses of neophyte Indians and the community kitchen, the walls of which were an adobe and a half thick, and roofed with tiles, have become inserviceable.

The state park and reconstructed Mission is in a very rural area, and of all the missions we've visited so far, this is the one that transports you back most vividly to the time when the Friars and the Indians first built the Mission, alone by itself in the California wilderness.
Since the mission is inland about 10 miles from the ocean, it was quite warm and seemed semi-arid, at least in the summer.
