Missionaria Protectiva - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Missionaria Protectiva is an arm of the Bene Gesserit, a fictional organization in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert.
In all, the intent of the Missionaria Protectiva is to bring about the view amongst the indigenous population that the Bene Gesserit is a personage to be sheltered and helped, when there may be in fact no way said Bene Gesserit could possibly assist the civilization in their quest for power/relief/healing.
One example of the myths of the Missionaria Protectiva is that of the messianic Mahdi.

The Missionaria Protectiva also worked on the LARGE scale—so large in fact that it was scarcely detectable until it was too late.
The point of the Missionaria Protectiva was to create tailor made religions to suit individual cultures on individual worlds.
The one uniting factor of the Missionaria Protectiva that was the same throughout the Old Imperium, was the notion that one day a savior would come of a Bene Gesserit mother and set the oppressed masses free.

In the novel Dune, the Bene Gesserit breeding scheme was, in theory, to have come to full fruition from the union of an Atreides daughter (born of the Lady Jessica and the Duke Leto Atreides) and the Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (son of Abulurd Harkonnen, brother of the Siridar-Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
Paul claims to be Mahdi, a figure from legendary material planted among the Fremen by the Missionaria Protectiva.
That the Mahdi legend has been planted on Dune indicates to Jessica that conditions on Dune are truly awful since this legend is reserved for only the harshest environments where a Bene Gesserit would need maximum leverage over her environment.

Political themes in the Dune series include human beings' susceptibility to mass manipulation by political propaganda, religious dogma (e.g., The Missionaria Protectiva), and sexual temptation, and the importance of self-awareness and self-mastery in resisting these types of control, as well as the study of power and control.
Paul emerges as the Kwisatz Haderach, and Jessica's knowledge of the secret religious myths of the Fremen planted by the Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva enable Paul to become Muad'Dib, a religious and political leader (Mahdi) who unites millions of the Fremen together into an unstoppable military force.
The Messiah legend is intended as a safety net, allowing on-the-lam Bene Gesserit agents to quickly gain the cooperation of a local populace in order to survive or escape pursuit, as the case may be.

The change of fief is a trap, though: shortly after committing themselves there, House Harkonnen and the Emperor invade (with the Emperor's sardaukar disguised as Harkonnen soldiers); the betrayal of the Duke by the family's doctor, Yueh[?], completes the plan, and House Atreides is destroyed in place.
Paul and Jessica narrowly escape to the desert, finding refuge with the Fremen thanks to the legends planted there by the Bene Gesserit's Missionaria Protectiva, which practices religious engineering.

This knowledge allowed Jessica to carve a niche for herself and Paul (a Bene Gesserit Sister and her BG-trained son) with the Fremen — the desert-dwelling natives of Dune, as the Missionaria was designed to facilitate (F. Herbert, Dune, 284).
A different type of mission was led by the Fish Speakers who, as the enforcers of Leto’s will, also acted as missionaries, with priests and priestesses coming from their ranks and from the spouses and other males.
