The Republican Party was established in 1854 by a coalition of former Whigs, Northern Democrats, and Free-Soilers who opposed the expansion of slavery and held a vision for modernizing the United States.
The Republican Party has demanded reforms in the UN and opposes the Kyoto Protocol because of the Protocol's uneven application to countries around the world, on the claim they believe it is likely to slow economic growth and the reduction of poverty, and because of disputes concerning the science behind it.
In the early 20th century, the usual symbol of the Republican Party in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Ohio was the eagle, as opposed to the Democratic donkey.

At least 76 people have petitioned the Mississippi Republican Party to disqualify David Clark, who is battling depression, from serving as district attorney for Madison and Rankin counties.
Kim Gallaspy, executive director of the Mississippi Republican Party, said in the five years she has been with the party, no one has filed a disqualification petition.
The petition, filed Thursday by Ashland attorneys Steven and Anthony Farese, alleges Clark "perpetrated a fraud and misrepresentation" on the party's executive committee and the citizens, voters and qualified electors in the district by concealing his lack of qualifications.
