Mississippi was the second state to secede from the Union as one of the Confederate States of America on January 9, 1861.
Mississippi was considered to typify the Deep South during the era of Jim Crow.

The inhabitants of the said territory shall always be entitled tot he benefits of the writs of habeas corpus, and of the trial by jury; of a proportionate representation in the legislature, and of judicial proceedings according to the course of the common law.
For example the territorial judge who sat as trial judge in parts of the territory not yet made a county (and in the separate Washington district) was referred to (descriptively) as the district or district superior court, while the same judge sitting as trial court counties was referred to (descriptively) as circuit court.

Under the provisions of the Treaty of Paris of 1763, France ceded its territory east of the Mississippi River to England, and its territory west of the river, along with New Orleans, to Spain.
In 1906, Mississippi adopted a revised code that included a provision that repealed all general laws that were not reenacted by the legislature or brought forward in the new code.
Even though Mississippi did not legally have an official state flag after 1906, no one seemed to have known it and practically everyone who was interested in such things presumed that it did and continued to fly the flag that was adopted in 1894.

The Choctaw Indians were an agricultural and cattle-raising people who lived in central and southern Mississippi, as well as Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana, during the 18th century.
