A historically fl institution of higher education, Mississippi Valley State University was opened in 1950 as Mississippi’s eighth and final public university.
As Valley’s number of students declined accordingly, Dr. Boykin resigned in August 1981, and was subsequently replaced by Dr. Joseph Boyer five months later in January 1982.
Mississippi, whereby the father of a African-American student attending one of the state’s three predominantly fl colleges sued the state claiming official bias in funding in favor of Mississippi’s five predominantly white institutions.

Mississippi Valley State University is a Division I-AA institution and a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
The university revoked the admission of all prospective student-athletes and students involved in this scheme and declared ineligible for competition all of the student-athletes involved.
However, the committee chose not to impose all of the presumptive penalties permitted under Bylaw 19.6.2.1, because of the actions taken by the university to institute appropriate corrective measures, including the denial of admission to involved prospective student-athletes and the suspension of all involved student-athletes, none of whom were reinstated for athletic competition.

The 314-kilometer segment of the Upper Mississippi River extending from the mouth of the Missouri River (near St. Louis, Missouri) to the mouth of the Ohio is often termed the Middle Mississippi River.
The Lower Mississippi River channel is wide and generally shallow in the northern part of its alluvial valley, where coarse bed materials delivered by tributaries allow the river to meander.
As stated previously, the recent decline in submersed plants in the Upper Mississippi River coincided with the severe drought of 1987-1989.

Mississippi Valley State University has the largest percentage increase of students enrolled this fall semester of any of the state's eight public universities, preliminary data shows.
Roy Hudson, Valley's vice president for university relations, said the enrollment hike can be attributed to more new students and first-time freshman as well as students with low employment opportunities returning to college during an economic downturn.
Mississippi universities also experienced record enrollments in fall 1996 through fall 2002.

INDIANAPOLIS---Mississippi Valley State University has been placed on two years of probation and NCAA show-cause penalties have been imposed on three former staff members for violations of bylaws governing academic fraud and unethical conduct.
The Division I Committee on Infractions, which conducted a hearing on the Mississippi Valley case November 4, 2000, considered the violations to be limited in scope and said they provided no recruiting or competitive advantage.
As required by NCAA legislation for any institution involved in a major infractions case, Mississippi Valley is subject to the NCAA's repeat-violator provisions for a five-year period beginning on the effective date of the penalties in this case, January 23, 2001.
