 Encyclopedia: Mississippian Period
The Mississippian is a geologic (sub)period lasting from roughly 360 million years before the present (BP) to 325 million years BP.
In Europe, the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian are one more-or-less continuous sequence of lowland continental deposits and are lumped together as the Carboniferous period.
As with most other geologic periods, the rock beds that define the period are well identified, but the exact start and end dates are uncertain by a few million years.

Late Mississippian Rattler Frog Effigy Pipe
A.D. This beautiful late Stone Age effigy pipe probably dates to the Late Mississippian period sometime between A.D. 1250 and A.D. It was found by W. McAdams in 1887 while digging in one of the mounds on the bluffs overlooking East St. Louis, Illinois.
Their research in geologic sourcing through x-ray diffraction and spectroscopic analysis of Mississippian red stone pipes from southern Illinois have shown that none of these pipes were made of bauxite or even catlinite as have been previously reported.
They have identified the material this pipe and other examples were made of as flint clay or fire clay from local sources in Missouri.

Template:Paleozoic The Devonian is a major division of the geologic timescale that extends from the end of the Silurian period (360 million years ago (mya)) to the beginning of the Mississippian subperiod of the Carboniferous (408.5 mya).
The Devonian period was a time of great tectonic activity, as Laurasia and Gondwanaland drew closer together.
The main contributors of the Devonian reefs were unlike modern reefs, which are constructed mainly by corals and calcareous algae.

The Carboniferous Period is used in the British Isles to describe the same interval as the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian Periods; a name which captures the significance of this geologic time with coal formation.
Since the Carboniferous Period is named after the plant-derived coal for which itís known, terrestrial plants obviously diversified during this period (see figure 15-12).
The reef framework was a loose construction of bryozoa, brachiopods, and crinoids that baffled and trapped fine-grained sediment, encasing the reef in mud.

Scolecodonts from central Missouri -- Sylvester 33 (1): 33 -- Journal of Paleontology
Although no genus of scolecodonts is confined to one geologic period, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, and Mississippian groups can be differentiated on the basis of specific characters.
Twenty-seven species of scolecodonts, seven of which are new, are described from the Upper Devonian Snyder Creek and the Lower Mississippian Chouteau formations of central Missouri.
The stratigraphic ranges of seven genera and ten species have been extended into the Mississippian as a result of this investigation.
