State highways in Missouri were first designated in 1922 and Missouri's system was used (along with Wisconsin's) as a plan for the entire U.S. Highway System which was created in 1926.
Missouri has also changed highway designations with a US highway or an interstate with the same number is designated through the state (Missouri State Highway 40 was redesignated Missouri State Highway 14 to avoid duplicating numbers with U.S. Highway 40 which also passes through the state).
State highways in Missouri are the responsibility of the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The State of Missouri has done what can be considered a very good job of installing commemorative Route 66 historic signs along the old highway.
In Missouri, a very large proportion of what was once U.S. Highway 66 is still under state jurisdiction as either primary or secondary state highways.
Unfortunately, designations other that the "66" moniker are assigned to these roads with only a few miles near the Kansas border being the only exception and even that short stretch is posted as Missouri State Highway 66.

Missouri roadside architecture ran the gamut, from the white clap board cabins of the Abby Lee Court in Conway, to the streamline moderne splendor of the late Coral Courts in St. Louis or the old Diamonds in Villa Ridge.

I-66 was given to a short and nondescript stretch of highway in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. The towns along 66 between Carthage and Springfield fought to keep the designation of US 66.

In fact, Kansas, with its roughly thirteen-mile-long (21 km) stretch of US 66 slicing off the southeast corner of the state near the Missouri and Oklahoma state lines, was totally bypassed by the late 1940s as part of a quicker, shorter route to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Missouri has a lot of history that predates Route 66 of which the road wanderer still can experience when the Interstate is left behind.
During the hey-day of Route 66 for hundreds of miles in either direction the roofs of old barns were painted as huge signs advertising this underground wonder, providing a unique billboard for the Mother Road.

Meanwhile the east end of US 66 had been becoming obsolete as well: in 1976 it was truncated to Gardner IL, then to Normal IL in 1978.
