We choose the Mist trail option rather than the switchbacks of the Muir trail.
I found this leg easier than the Mist trail, largely because the steps are shorter and more even.
We noticed an older gentleman on the trail and wondered whether he was Marlow, the gentleman we had seen last year celebrating his 70th birthday on Half Dome.

Follow the rock trail over the falls and briefly head northeast to the junction with the Mist Trail.

Due to bad conditions, the trail was closed going to Nevada Fall so we had to leave the John Muir Trail at this point and take the.6 mile path to the top of Vernal Fall back on to the Mist Trail.
The trail is a steep vertical descent on a staircase of rocks which are slippery from the mist of the falls.

This trail is the steepest climb out of Yosemite Valley, taking hikers up switchbacks toward Snow Creek, North Dome, and the north rim of the Valley.
The Four Mile Trail, primarily used by day hikers, travels up switchbacks from the valley floor to Glacier Point providing many stunning vistas of the valley en route.
This trail passes through the area burned in the 1990 fires and crosses two unbridged creeks which can be difficult in the spring.

The trail to the top of Half Dome is 16.4 miles roundtrip and has an elevation gain of 4800 feet, a long haul for muscles already sore and fatigued.
A little farther down the trail we came to a wooden structure which housed a bathroom and had a water fountain, it was right about here that the trail starts to climb.
Renewed we hike on up the trail, we pass a rest stop where there is a bathroom on the left side of the trail and it is here that we meet up with other hikers.

I do not know when they open the Mist trail (probably soon) or the upper part of the Muir Trail (usually later), but these trails are spectacular no matter how you do it.
I recommend the trail to the top of Yosemite Falls if you have time for two good hikes-it is twice as strenuous, but well worth the climb-even if you go halfway up beyond Columbia Rock to get a good view of the upper Yosemite Fall.
Still I brought plastic garbage bags to cover myself on the mist trail because it is still cold in the morning hours.

you can return via the mist trail, but it is steeper and you will encounter people coming up the trail, which makes it a little hairy sometimes.
But these trails may still be choked with snow, and the streams may be full to overflowing.
There is a parking area near the 4 mile trail and you could take the shuttle back (or close to) your car when you finish the Panorama Trail (which is one I would definitely do).

The Mist Trail is so named because spray from the waterfalls soaks hikers during the spring, so be prepared.
The last part of the trail is too steep to climb without hand support and the park service graciously maintains the cables up the last quarter mile to the summit.
The shortest route down is the same trail you took on the way up, though people with tired legs may want to consider the more gentle John Muir Trail, especially when the Mist Trail is muddy.

Generally, I would recommend the Mist Trail but there are times when it is very wet and dangerous if the runoff is at its peak.
The mist trail is the most scenic, and I would take that unless your knees are worn out or it is too wet and slick (rangers will know).
Though the trail to the first lake is only a mile or so, it is a steep incline, so it isn't exactly quick.

Going down you get to really enjoy the mist trail, if you get some spray after a hot summer day, then you have had a perfect hike.
Find the Panorama trail to Illilouette Falls and hike south and east until you meet the John Muir Trail to Nevada Falls.
I have been on this trail 5 times, hiked to Half Dome and the Valley 3 times and I have never seen another set of hikers until reaching the John Muir Trail.

The dorky look on the male subject’s face is probably due to mild hypoxia and fact that 1” behind him is a 100’ moss covered drop to sure death should he slip while trying to look happy for the camera.
The mist trail was good for cooling off after climbing 100 feet in 200 awkwardly placed steps.
The sound of the falls was like that of a passing train at this point and the mist covered everything...like an English fog but with fresh mountain air.

Because we were on the trail late in the season, we choose the Mist Trail.
This trail is the most crowded trail in Yosemite and this day it defiantly lived up to it's reputation.
We continued on the Mist Trail to the intersection with the JMT (5,960, 2.5mi) where the second toilet is located.

We did not want to be fighting crowds and the heat on the way up the cables, and wanted to be off the Dome in case there was a repetition of the previous day's afternoon thunderstorm.
There were a couple of dicey moments along the way down the Mist Trail, but nothing compared to what I had just been through.

We could hear the roaring waterfall and as we turned a corner, we saw for the first time why this was called the Mist Trail.
The last one is probably best at the point where you get back to the junction between the John Muir Trail and the Mist Trail on the way back to the trailhead.
Your best bet is to climb up the Mist Trail instead of coming down because it's easier on the knees and also infinitely more safe.

When you are at the top of these falls, the trail will go down for a few meters and you will be right at the top of the waterfalls.
