Magee sings in a style that fuses blues with elements of soul and rap, plays electric guitar with withering intensity, and uses both feet to stomp out polyrhythms on a homemade percussion setup that includes hi-hat cymbals topped with tambourines and maracas.
As a young man he worked local blues clubs under the monicker "Five Fingers Magee" and was billed as "the fastest guitar player in the world." After a stint in Germany as a U.S. Army paratrooper in the 1950s, Magee was demobilized in New York and ended up settling in Harlem.
Gussow's transformation from an academic to a blues player was facilitated by lessons he took from his mentor, New York harmonica virtuoso Nat Riddles, who had performed and recorded with Larry Johnson, Odetta, and others, and by his acculturation into the jam session life at Dan Lynch, a storied East Village juke joint.

 Theater: 'Blues for Mister Charlie'
"Blues for Mister Charlie," which stormed into the ANTA Theater last night, is not a tidy play.
"Mister Charlie" is the phrase the Negro uses for the white man. His play sings the blues for the white man's moral crisis as much as for the Negro's frustration and agony.
There are memorable dramatic fragments scattered through "Blues for Mister Charlie." Among the best are the vignettes in which key characters speak their thoughts aloud before they testify.

Blues for Mister Charlie moved all who witnessed its explosive power, especially me. It was a hard journey, but the destination proved far more satisfying than I could ever have imagined.

Although the flexible, broad-minded Allison has a blues orientation, she is by no means a blues purist; not everything she plays adheres to a traditional 12-bar blues structure, and her work owes a lot to rock, soul, funk and jazz as well as different styles of blues.
Allison's eclectic outlook is one of her strong points; her ability to move from a tough, aggressive blues-rock groove to a more cerebral, fusion-minded approach to the occasional soul-jazz/hard bop number has made for some very unpredictable albums.
