Mister Roberts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mister Roberts is a Tony Award–winning play and a 1955 Academy Award–nominated film, both of which tell the story of a naval junior-grade lieutenant during World War II who stands up for his crew against the petty tyranny of the ship's commander.
Ron Hubbard, during his life, claimed (without much evidence) that Mister Roberts was based on himself and his career aboard the combat support ship USS Algol.
Mister Roberts was followed by a film sequel, Ensign Pulver, in 1964.

Often funny but with an undercurrent of bitterness and tragedy, "Mister Roberts" is full of characters who are likable even when they're not being respectable, and its power struggles and lessons of self-worth have kept the decades-old work relevant.
A memorable line from "Mister Roberts" may claim that the crew merely travels "from tedium to apathy and back again, with a side trip to monotony," but this production ensures that the audience won't feel the same way.

The TV series "Mister Roberts" was a sitcom based on the same source material as the famous film (and stage play).
The original novel, play and film 'Mister Roberts' are largely concerned with the efforts of naval officer Roberts to get out of his safe posting aboard the U.S.S. Reluctant (a cargo ship in the Pacific during World War 2) so that he can receive a transfer to hazardous duty in a combat zone.
Also, the original novel 'Mister Roberts' and its stage adaptation were rather startling (at the time) for their bawdiness, entirely appropriate to the story's theme of sex-starved sailors on extended sea duty.
