  Science Fair Projects - Mistley Towers
Mistley Towers are the twin towers of the now demolished Church of St. Mary the Virgin at Mistley in Essex.
His design was in the neoclassical style, with a tower at both the east and the west ends of the church.
The square symmetrical towers are in the neoclassical style, resembling tall pavilions rather than towers, with each facade pedimented and the whole surmounted by a cupola decorated with blind windows interspersed by Ionic columns.

Both Manningtree and Mistley were important ports playing a major part in the wool trade (over five centuries ago) and later the brewing industry.
Mistley Towers along with the lake behind are reminders of the wealth of the 18th Century Mistley.
Their vision to develop the area into a spa town to rival Bath sadly failed and the lake and the two towers are all that remain.

The Towers are all that remain after the centre section of the medieval church was demolished in 1870, as the new Church was being built.
The Towers are located on a bank overlooking the River Stour, amoungst a grave yard next to Mistley Quay.
The key is available to view the interior of the towers, and the contact details are written on the sign at the entrance to the graveyard.

The manor of Mistley, or Scidddinchoe, was held by the wife of Henry de Ramis, at the Domesday Survey, and its capital mansion was called the Old Hall, and is supposed to have stood on the site of that which was called New Hall in 1387, when it was the seat of Thomas Hardyng.
Mistley Hall, which was long the seat of the Rigby family, had a beautiful and well-wooded park of 700 acres, and was a handsome mansion, on an elevated site, commanding charming prospects of the vale and the estuary of the Stour, but it was taken down about four years ago.
Mistley Hall was sold in lots, in 1844, and since then the extensive park has been divided into meadows etc., which may be irrigated from the conduits of pure water which the Right Hon.

The parish of Mistley (and New Mistley) is a small picturesque village approx.
As you enter from Manningtree the first historic building you pass is the famous Mistley "Adam" Towers, or St Mary the Virgin Church, as it was known before the central church was demolished.
The memorial and sign post shown in the picture are at the entrance to Mistley (travelling towards the left of the picture).

The small town of Mistley stands on the south bank of the estuary of the Stour east of Manningtree and not far from Flatford Mill where Constable painted The Haywain.
This was started in 1776 with a tower at each end of the church crowned by a dome.
In 1870 a new parish church was built and, incredibly when you think of it, the centre of Adam's church was pulled down leaving only these two rather incongrous looking towers standing by the waterside.

Designed by architect Robert Adam, they are part of a church built in 1776 as an addition to the estate of Richard Rigby, Paymaster General of the time.
It was an oddity even then, having towers at both east and west ends, but the nave was pulled down less than 100 years later, leaving the two towers as the only evidence of Adam’s church.
