MISTRA ESTATES - LADOPOULOS - Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Mistra
Mistra lies in the midst of a country, rich in history, near the birthplace of Helen of Troy and the cradle of the famous Spartans.
Mistra was founded after the Frankish conquest of the Peloponnese in 1205, while Sparta, a few miles to the east, in the rich valley of Lacedaemon, became the favorite residence of the Frankish princes.
In 1259 Villehardouin was defeated and captured by John Paleologos, brother of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Paleologos, in the battle of Pelagonia in northern Greece.

Among the representative monuments of Mistra during this period are the church of the Virgin Hodegetria or Aphendiko, dating from the first decades of the century and that of the Virgin Peribleptos, dating from its last decades.

Mistra's real heyday came under the Byzantine Greeks, when most of its churches and more than 2,000 houses, as well as the enormous Palace of the Despots, were built.
Mistra was such an important city that many Byzantine emperors sent their heirs here for some on-the-job training.
After Constantinople and the Byzantine empire fell to the Turks in 1453, Mistra held out; the last emperor of Byzantium was crowned in the Cathedral at Mistra, which finally fell to the Turks in 1460.

While the Church of the Virgin Peribleptos in Mistra survives in good condition, the wallpaintings of other Late Byzantine churches have only been preserved through the detachment of their frescoes from the church walls and their conservation in a museum setting.
This is true for the Chapel of Saint Christopher in Mistra, painted in the same decades as the Peribleptos Church.
Both sets of frescoes from Mistra evidence the major hallmarks of what is called the "Palaiologan style" in painting, a style found not only in Mistra but thoughout the Byzantine sphere and especially in the Palaiologan capital of Constantinople.

Silence of Mistra by James Braun - Book
"The Silence of Mistra" is the first effort of author Jim Braun, a fantasy about a young knight's quest for a stolen treasure map.
"Mistra" is a character-driven story, each adventurer along to find and return the stolen map given demons that poke and prod them as the story spirals towards a dazzling (and somewhat tragic) conclusion.
Rather than the usual heros or villains one might find in the usual grand Tolkien-like epic, this is one of the few stories I've read that concerns itself more with the human side of fantasy, effectively grounding this wonderous tale in a rock-solid reality.

James Braun has made "The Silence of Mistra," his short fantasy novel, available as an Adobe Acrobat portable document file, or PDF.
The story's environment reminds me very much of an alternate, early colonial America: The British have established a foothold, have brought over slaves to work for them, have had some trouble with their neighbors in the Old World, and are quite nervous about the locals.
My only suggestion, then, would be for Braun to make sure he updates the file so that readers see what he wants them to - a wonderful start to what will hopefully be a great run of books.
