The Mistral type is a class of assault helicopter carriers of the French Navy, capable of deploying 16 NH90 or Tigre.
The Mistral features a fully capable 69-bed hospital (as much as a 40 000 inhabitant town), with a triage room, a shock room, two surgery rooms, a room for treatment of burn injuries, a telesurgery room, and radiology equipments including a scanner.
The Mistral was constructed in two segments, the bow part in Saint-Nazaire, and the aft part in Brest.

MISTRAL sailed from her homeport of Toulon in the South of France on 18 July 2006, after taking just two days to load and prepare the 199 metre, 22,000 tonne amphibious ship for her first operational deployment.
Each of the six landing spots on 5200 square metre flight deck have been tested under different weather conditions and sea states, with more than 400 landings conducted at a rate 20 per hour and using all the aircraft types that could be required to land on the ship.
The Mistral Class LHD is capable of simultaneous operation of up to six helicopters from its flight deck and provides storage and hangar facilities designed to accommodate NH90 troop lift helicopters Tiger armed reconnaissance helicopters similar to those already ordered for the Australian Defence Force.

The LPX is a high-speed amphibious ship, based on the concept of "over-the- horizon assault." As the name indicates, the "over-the-horizon assault" comprises a military operation in which an amphibious landing operation is conducted with high-speed air-cushioned vehicles and helicopters from beyond the horizon, where they can’t be detected or attacked by the enemy.
The LCAC is able to attempt landing in the coastal areas of 70% of the coasts.
As it stands, the standard Mistral class is too small, hence the idea to add a 20m plug to meet the RAN requirements.

The Mistral (L9013) is an amphibious assault helicopter carrier of the French Marine Nationale, the fourth vessel to bear the name, and lead ship of her class.
She is capable of deploying 16 NH90 or Tigre helicopters, four landing barges or two LCAC, and 70 vehicles, including 13-tank Leclerc battalion, with up to 450 soldiers (900 for a short period).
The Mistral is the flagship of the system off Lebanon, escorted by the frigates Jean Bart and Jean de Vienne, and along with the Siroco.

Description.  A class of Landing Ships Dock (LSD) tasked with the transportation and amphibious landing of mechanized infantry regiments.  The French Navy classification is “Transport de Chalands de Débarquement” (TCD).
The FS Foudre, as the lead ship of this class, was also intended to act as the flagship of an amphibious warfare task group for the French Navy.
The armament on the Foudre consists of one 40 mm and two 20 mm guns and the SADRAL point defense missile system.  SADRAL consists of a launcher with six Mistral missiles, which have a 2.5-nautical-mile firing range.  Sagem optronic fire control was fitted on the Foudre in 1997.

The current Invincible class of small aircraft carriers are scheduled to leave service between 2010-2015 and preliminary studies in to a possible replacement - initially entitled CVSG(R), later CV(R) and finally CVF - started as early as 1994.
The case for CVF was ultimately accepted and the Strategic Defence Review announced that when the Invincible class carrier force reached the end of its service life it would be replaced by two such new large carriers.
The Invincible class of carriers were designed for Cold War anti-submarine warfare operations, with an airgroup of mainly ASW helicopters plus a limited air defence capability provided by a small number of embarked Sea Harriers.
