Gas turbine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gas turbines are described thermodynamically by the Brayton cycle, in which air is compressed isentropically, combustion occurs at constant pressure, and expansion over the turbine occurs isentropically back to the starting pressure.
Simple cycle gas turbines in the power industry require smaller capital investment than combined cycle gas, coal or nuclear plants and can be designed to generate small or large amounts of power.
Gas turbines are used in many naval vessels, where they are valued for their high power-to-weight ratio and their ships' resulting acceleration and ability to get underway quickly.

 Turbines on a dime
A conventional (macroscopic) gas turbine, Epstein said, consists of a compressor, a combustion chamber, and a turbine that is driven by the combustion exhaust and powers the compressor.
The MIT team has successfully demonstrated a 2-millimeter-long combustion chamber that is 40 times the relative size of a conventional combustor.
The MIT researchers face several challenges to successful microfabrication, including the production of features hundreds of microns deep, fillets to reduce stress on highly loaded parts, the correct electrical properties for the motor/generator, the excavation of volumes millimeters across and hundreds of microns deep, and assembly and packaging issues.

Tomahawk: Mit Gas: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Although I'm not usually susceptible to press release anti-hyperbole like "Mit Gas finds Tomahawk more comfortable working together as a proper group," I'll be damned if there isn't something to that little bit of PR wisdom that accompanies Tomahawk's second full-length.
Adding to Tomahawk's musical evolution is the fact that Denison's guitar lines are significantly less riff-oriented than before; sure, he's still just as likely to throw down some Zeppelin-worthy flatted-fifth power chords, but he spends more of his time clearing the room for Patton to throw his voice around like an abusive stepfather.
Song-wise, there are some real killers on Mit Gas-- cuts that reference the intensity of the self-titled record but still manage to take it to a higher level.

The latter, Tomahawk, just unleashed Mit Gas, a propulsive, crushing heavy metal jaunt meets lethargic, and even dreamy melodies, a stunning, sweeping combination that catches you off guard all-too-often and leaves you shaking your head in disbelief.
Tomahawk's Mit Gas is a refreshing take on heavy metal, an escape from the cookie-cutter, over-produced, corporate output of so-called "heavy metal" bands these days.
Mit Gas is laden with chops, style, and substance, riding high on spooky space-rock, semi-lush pop textures, and aggressive rock.

Our propulsion packages can be designed to integrate two or three TF Series gas turbines in either a "side-by-side" or and "over/under" or “Tri-pak” configuration depending on the space constraints in the hull.

MIT boffins make hot superfluid | The Register
Scientists at MIT have created a new kind of matter: a gas of atoms that exhibits superfluidity at high temperatures.
The last step is to get the gas to rotate by spinning a green laser beam around it, a process graduate student Martin Zwierlein described as being "like sanding the bumps off of a wheel to make it perfectly round".
Using this rather dodgy sounding logic,(but hey, if you can't trust a Nobel laureate, who can you trust?), it seems the team is allowed to scale their results up from the very high densities of fermionic atoms to the more spaced-out nature of mere solids.

Keeping a Level Head Don’t Rush to Conclusions in Tragedy’s Aftermath
To say that both deaths are indicative of a trend, that MIT is a pressure cooker that drives its students to the point of fatal irresponsibility, is to paint campus with such a broad brush as to obscure the facts specific to each incident.
Yes, MIT can stress some students out, but it is a running jump of logic to then conclude that MIT is an inherently stressful place that drives its students to “blow off steam” in sometimes-fatal ways.
The media like to portray MIT so; observers often point to hacks and unusual MIT traditions as evidence that students need ways to express their frustrated creativity.

Mit Gas (a German reference to carbonated water, or "with fizz") shows marked improvement over the band's initial effort, and thankfully utilizes Patton's effects more...effectively.
The production has also improved, but along with the presence of some noticable tape hiss, Patton's vocals still seem a little undermixed (over the past five years Patton has expanded more and more into the realm of "atmosphere over all else," even going as far as to no longer include printed lyrics with his artwork).
Surprisingly, Mit Gas debuted at number 137 on the Billboard 200 charts with virtually no promotion (number seven on the Billboard Independant charts), so there is certainly buzz around the group...and with good reason.

I was forced to take a six hour drive from Pittsburgh to Fort Wayne, Indiana, this past week, and I had the pleasure of spending part of the trip with Mit Gas, alongside a vintage disc from barroom poet Tom Waits, Frank's Wild Years.
Choosing to imbue Mit Gas with flashes of the bizarre, marrying experimental rock with nu-metal was a tricky proposition, but give Patton's bandmates credit -- they very nearly succeed.
By failing to rein himself in, Patton paradoxically destroys Mit Gas's credibility as a stand-alone album while simultaneously imbuing it with such an unbelievable amount of high-wire vocal shenanigans as to make it almost required listening, even if just to learn where that all-important line of credibility can be found.
