  Mitch Ryder
It was the final straw, and Ryder bailed out of his contract with Crewe, who promptly milked the last bit of mileage he could by slapping horn tracks over the R&B tunes The Wheels had covered and putting out the "Mitch Ryder Sings The Hits" album.
It was the only time Ryder recorded with a bona-fide soul band, but fine music didn't spell commercial success, and Ryder returned home to a reunion with The Wheels drummer John Badanjek in the short-lived supergroup called simply, "Detroit", which lasted just long enough to record one heavy-duty rock 'n' roll album in 1971.
The tragedy of Mitch's story is that mis-management, and show biz machinations sidetracked a great band, and the financial inequity aside, quite possibly prevented Mitch Ryder from tapping his full potential as a singer.

Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels Album Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Although they were basically a glorified cover band (much like The Animals), Ryder (who got his stage name while leafing through the phone directory) and co. produced a sweaty brand of party music that was notable for its propulsive drive, its wild energy, and Ryder’s raucously shouted soul vocals.
Unfortunately, manager/producer Bob Crewe, who had served the Four Seasons so well, distanced Ryder from the Detroit Wheels in a terribly ill-advised bid for solo success (he tried to make Ryder into a Vegas-styled crooner and Ryder has had limited success with intermittent releases since).
Among Ryder’s more notable post-Detroit Wheels projects was an album with Booker T. and The MG’s, from which this collection samples “Liberty,” and an album with the band Detroit, which included Badanjek and legendary guitarist Steve Hunter.
