 Mitch Ryder
It was Mitch and The Wheels who served as the musical bridge between the Motown soul factory and the high energy, take no prisoners rock 'n' roll that would roar out of Detroit via Iggy and The Stooges, MC5, Ted Nugent and Bob Seger.
Ryder hit during the mid-'60s when AM radio was going through a golden era courtesy of Motown, Stax, the British Invasion, Aretha, JB, and any number of garage band one-hit wonders.
It was the only time Ryder recorded with a bona-fide soul band, "Liberty" shows it was a two way exchange- Ryder's Detroit bred rock 'n' roll energy goosed the musicians just as their innate funkiness moved Ryder's singing in new directions.

Backed by the original Detroit Wheels, he topped the charts with rave-ups like "Jenny Take a Ride," "Devil With a Blue Dress" and "Sock it to Me, Baby!" back when the MC5 and Suzi Quatro were playing sock hops.
Despite defining the stomping soul-punk sound that thrives in Detroit to this day, Ryder says that he was "fucked for several million dollars" by his label and management, and never profited from his early hits.
Ryder's continued recording and performing to this day, and following Saturday's show at Healey's, he'll be setting off for a month-long string of one-nighters across Europe, where he maintains a loyal fan base.

In 1969 Ryder teamed with Booker T. and the MG's for an LP titled The Detroit/Memphis Experiment before returning home and reuniting with Badanjek in a new seven-piece lineup known simply as Detroit.

For a brief and glorious time (roughly, 1965-67), Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels were the least inhibited and most exuberantly driving rock and soul set going - and maybe better than that.
(There actually were those who swore that, given half a shot, the Wheels might have been the only white act with the potential of blowing even James Brown out of the hall on their best nights.) And they're all here and then some.
Everything they did right is included here (and I think Mitch did say what you think he said - "hits me like a fu**" - in "Sock It To Me, Baby," which tells you something about who was asleep when that one went Top 20 in 1967).

Ryder himself was a James Brown-inspired dervish with a gruffly soulful voice, and the Wheels played as tough and flashy as they came, particularly the band's secret weapon, the most underrated drummer in rock history, Johnny "B" Badanjek.
