Mitcham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mitcham became part of the London Borough of Merton in 1965, an effect of The London Government Act 1963, and this led to further expansion of the housing estates in Eastfields, Phipps Bridge and Pollards Hill.
Mitcham was listed in the Domesday Book as a small farming community, with 250 people living in two hamlets; Mitcham, an area known today as Upper Mitcham; and Whitford, today known as the Lower Green area.
Mitcham is part of the Mitcham and Morden parliamentary constituency, as of 2005 a safe Labour seat.

News Letter [issue 43] - Mitcham station
Mitcham station is often called the oldest station in the world.
The modern Mitcham Tramlink station, lies under what appears to be the open shed in the background of the picture.
The first drawing here shows the station as it looked in 1814.If the drawing is accurate, it looks as if the SIR station was a separate complex, lying to the west of what is now London Road (A217).

The return journey by coach to the station reveals that, with it being positioned to the east of the dual carriageway, it is necessary to head by road back to the main line itself, pass over it, negotiate a roundabout and recross the line in order to return south to Heathrow Junction.
The Pendleton Station area has frequent bus services, Salford Crescent station is half a mile away and anyway the walk would be beneficial to the health of those who sit down all day at work and who sit on a bus or train when travelling thereto and -from as well.
It was possible to climb up to the former station entrance on the Shrewsbury side of the embankment but the gateway at the top was blocked off and it was not possible to see if anything remained of the station.

 The Town of Mitcham
The first evidence of Saxon settlements in Mitcham were from the cemetery on either side of Morden Road, west of Mitcham station, near the railway line.
Mitcham also became an important halting post on the route from London to Brighton and inns such as the King's Head, which survives today as the Burn Bullock, sprung up along the route.
The four manors which comprised Mitcham in the Middle Ages remained sparsely populated but the parish became highly fashionable in the reign of Elizabeth I. Both the explorer, Walter Raleigh, and poet, John Donne, resided here for a time and the Monarch herself stayed in the area on five occasions.
