The key figure in the atlas conception is mathematical physicist and chaos-theory trailblazer Mitchell Feigenbaum.
For this atlas, Feigenbaum created a new map projection, now known as Hammond's Optimal Conformal, which the publishers claim is "the most distortion-free conformal map possible and the most accurate projections that have ever been made."
He wrote software using fractal geometry capable of reconfiguring coastlines, borders, and mountain ranges to fit a multitude of map scales and projections.

For this reason maps and the mapmakers behind these renderings—publishers like Samuel Augustus Mitchell and Alvin J. Johnson, or publishing houses such as Rand McNally—carried the dreams to a greater audience, enticed them to join in the vision, and, most importantly, showed them the way.
Some of the digital collection's maps delineate the boundaries under dispute within the years 1818 and 1846, culminating in a peaceful compromise and the decision of the 49th parallel as the northern border of the United States.
By studying these past maps we find—hidden within colorful cartouches, precise boundaries and skillful gradations by and artists' hand—the assumptions placed on the land as observed by their authors.

This Native map, drawn on birch bark (which accounts for its shape), shows the migration legend of the Ojibwe, from the creation of their people (on the right) to their home in the upper Midwest (on the left).
One strength of the book is that principles of map design are often best shown by visual example, and another is that the examples are not tied to any one GIS software package.
After searching through the local geography dept library, and searching the university bookstore for something simple, practical, and effective, I have to say "Making Maps" works great.
