Earlier in the century the premier duke of Ireland, the Duke of Leinster, had built a large, rather forbidding country mansion in an undeveloped suburb of the city on the edge of Molesworth Fields, south of the Liffey.
As far as birth was concerned, the major claimant for the rich prize was William, son of the Duke and Duchess of Leinster, the Duchess being one of the five lively daughters of the English Duke of Richmond.
It was impossible to marry higher in Ireland and the Leinsters had immense political and social prestige.* But the Duke and Duchess had had a superfluity of children and consequently their great state was not supported by great riches.

Mitchelstown Caves are located in county Tipperary 12 kilometres east of Mitchelstown.
The limestone being dissolved by rainwater percolating through the soil and stone is redeposited in the cave as the drops of water evaporate in the air forming stalactites, stalagmites, calcite columns, and flow stones among other examples of formations which are to be seen in the caves.
Considering that it takes over a thousand years for a stalagmite or stalactite to grow a few centimetres the formations found in Mitchelstown Caves are highly impressive.

Much of Wednesday I felt like I was still somewhere over there...in the square in Mitchelstown, Ireland, waiting for an Eirebus to Dublin, waiting for someone to return the dozen calls we'd left for rescue after the car's breakdown.
The main one is that Ireland is still a land of small towns, which dovetails into Nanty Glo as topic A in this space.
In Ireland, teenagers and young adults seem everywhere, which also reminds us of an earlier generation in our own lives when the bulge on the demographic chart was greatly skewed toward youth rather than seniority, in contrast to our present era.

 Read Ireland - Featured Authors
Short story writer, novelist and playwright, Trevor was born William Trevor Cox on May 24, 1928, in Mitchelstown, County Cork.
Trevor acknowledges the influence of James Joyce on his short story writing, and 'the odour of ashpits and old weeds and offal' can be detected in his work, but the overall impression is not a gloominess, since, particularly in the early work, the author's wry humor offers the reader a tragicomic version of the world.
In his third collection of stories, Angels at the Ritz, Trevor makes his first reference to the Northern Ireland Troubles, and in the following collections his observations deepen and darken, especially when the stories illustrate the coercive power of history.

They were known as the Ascendancy, the dashing aristocratic elite that controlled Irish politics and society at the end of the eighteenth century—and at their pinnacle stood Caroline and Robert King, Lord and Lady Kingsborough of Mitchelstown Castle.
Heirs to ancient estates and a vast fortune, Lord and Lady Kingsborough appeared to be blessed with everything but marital love—which only made the scandal that tore through their family more shocking.
In 1798, at the height of a rebellion that was setting Ireland ablaze, Robert King was tried for the murder of his wife’s cousin—a crime born of passion that proved to have extraordinary political implications.
