Power Tools: Miter Saw   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Miter saws replace the traditional miter box, the wooden box that allowed you to cut wood with a hand saw at angles of (typically) 45 and 90 degrees.
The powered miter saw is, at its most basic, a large circular saw that pivots at its rear, allowing you to bring the saw blade down onto the wood.
However, it should be borne in mind that the miter saw is, in effect, a cut down version of a radial arm saw.

Miter saw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A miter saw (also called mitre saw) is a tool used to make accurate crosscuts and miters in a workpiece.
While most miter saws enable precise one-degree incremental changes to the miter index, many also provide "stops" that allow the miter index to be quickly set to common angles (such as 15°, 30°, or 45°).
Most modern miter saws have self-retracting blade guards, which automatically retract when the saw is lowered onto a workpiece and re-cover the blade when the saw is raised.

Machine Guarding eTool: Saws - Miter Saws
The saw blade and motor are mounted on an elbow hinged arm, which is fixed at the rear of the saw.
The miter saw is sometimes referred to as a chop box.
Miter saws must be equipped with a guard that protects the portion of the saw above the table.

Makita Miter Saw   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Miter saws typically cost much less than a radial arm saw, but if you go with this model and purchase a stand for it as I did, you'll end up spending about the same amount as you would for a radial arm saw.
The motor of the saw is angled at 45 degrees.
But to be able to get many of the benefits of a radial arm saw, have a portable unit, and tremendous accuracy, make this saw a dream machine.

HOME IMPROVEMENT : Saws : Sliding Compound Miter-Saw Basics : DIY Network
The sliding compound miter saw does the job of both a miter saw and a radial-arm saw.
To use the sliding compound miter saw as a miter saw, swivel the blade and the table to 45 degrees (figure A).
To use the sliding compound miter saw as a radial-arm saw, lock the saw, blade and table into place at their original positions.

 Miter Saw Stand
When working with Crown Molding that is wider than 5 1/2", you must use a Compound Miter Saw (Dual compound makes it easier), which allows you to lay the stock flat on the table, and tilt the saw to the correct cutting angle.
The inexpensive Sears Miter saw that I started with would not stay square, and had to be manually trued every cut, which takes time and is very frustrating.
The new saw was much too deep to fit on my old work bench, so I wound up making a rolling miter saw stand for the saw.

 Clearmount Miter Saw System
~ using one piece, heavy gauge aluminum extrusion, that mounts to the top of the saw table ~ has solved the problem inherent in competitive systems where the scales are extension arms that need to be attached with brackets to the sides of the saw.
This is left to the individual saw, thereby keeping the smallest opening in the back.
Calibration of the scale is done when the scale is mounted to the saw ~ it is easy to do and unless the scale is removed from the saw, only needs to be done once.

Buying Guide for Miter Saws   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Miter Saw motors are mounted on a swing arm that pivots left or right to produce angled cuts.
Compound miter saws are useful for picture frames, crown molding, or any project that requires angled cuts in two planes.
They are slightly more expensive than regular miter saws, but the advantage of making compound cuts in one pass is well worth the price.

Although most saws can be easily accommodated, some models may require you to make on site modifications.
This attaches to the flip-away stop to extend the reach of the stop toward the saw blades and also allows for the cutting of pieces with mitred ends.
It also acts as a safety interlock, preventing saw activation while the stop is moving, and stop movement while the saw is cutting.

Not wanting to invest a large amount of money in a full featured saw since there is one sitting in our woodshop a few miles from my house, and being simply too lazy to want to haul it back and forth as I need it, I started my search.
I have used this saw on the molding project, as well as some deck repairs cutting 2x4's and 2x6's.
