* Mithila (Sanskrit: मिथिला, mithilā) was a kingdom in ancient India.
The most important reference to Mithila is in the Hindu epic, Ramayana where Lord Rama's wife Sita is said to have been the princess of the land, born to King Janaka, who ruled Mithila from Janakpur.
Ganga Devi is perhaps the most famous Mithila artist; she illustrated traditional ritual Mithila decorations, depictions of popular deities, scenes from the Ramayana, and events in her own life.

On the north of this land of Mithila stands the Himalayas; to the west the Na'rayan'ii-Gan'd'aka river; in the south the Ganges, and to the east, the old Kaoshii river.
Another speciality of the pronunciation in Mithila is that the vowel sounds ending in long "ii" become changed into short "i", and the last vowel is pronounced before the consonant ; for instance, ma't'i is pronounced as ma't'.

In Mithila we are happily enjoying many such useless celebrations that have no use, no worth, no significance but we are following the "died people’s rule" in other word I would like to say we are being ruled by dead people.
According to George Grierson Vajjika is western Maithili and Angika is southern Maithili and Muslims of Mithila speak Jolahi Maithili.
Mithila protagonists are well aware that the utility of Hindi and English is in the modern era but at the same time we want statehood not only for our socio-economic regenration but alos for our cultural identity rather more for so.

The Mithila paintings derive from an ancient cultural region in northern Bihar where women’s paintings have been used to consecrate space for human habitation and ritual purposes for many generations.

The Ethnic Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 dedicated to the continuing development of Mithila Painting.

After numerous discussions with local painters it was agreed that the Ethnic Arts Foundation should establish a free Mithila Art Institute (MIA) in Madhubani to encourage and support the development of the younger generation of Mithila painters.
Some of the students had totravel daily by bus or bicycle from distant parts of the Mithila region, and modest scholarships were available for those who could otherwise not attend.
They are also being introduced to broader cultural issues in the Mithila and Indian traditions, as well as the arts of other regions of the world.

For centuries the women of Mithila have decorated the walls of their houses with intricate, linear designs on the occasion of marriages and other ceremonies, Painting is a key part of the education of Mithila women, culminating in the painting of the walls of the kohbar, or nuptial chamber on the occasion of a wedding.
The women of Mithila were encouraged to apply their painting skills to paper as a means of supplementing their meager incomes.
Works by several of these Mithila artists (Baua Devi, Sita Devi and Mahasundari Devi), along with Santhal jadupatua paintings and old Bengali scrolls, are included in the show Stories, Ceremonies and Souvenirs: Popular Paintings from Eastern India, currently on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
