Mitiaro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
THE FOURTH largest island in the Cooks group, Mitiaro is of volcanic origin.
Beaches are limited but there are crystal clear pools ideal for a cooling swim in the subterranean limestone caves and the beach at low tide abounds in interesting marine life.
Mitiaro is definitely a place for visitors who like peace and quiet and a chance to read those big books they have always promised themselves they would finish!

The Mitiaro Palm is relatively well protected by being in the inaccessible centre of the makatea scrublands.
When I planned my trip, I had the choice of several islands but the fact that Mitiaro is home to the only endemic palm tree in the Cook Islands and I was unable to find photographs of this plant anywhere on the 'net were factors in my choosing this island.
The palms are in good condition and Mitiaro has relatively few of the invasive plants and birds that plague the other islands in the southern Cooks.

MITIARO = Nukuroa - in the Southern group of the Cook Islands, is one of a group of three islands 135 miles east-northeast of Rarotonga known to the native Cook islanders as 'NGA-PU-TORU' (the three roots), the other 2 islands being Atiu and Mauke.
Mitiaro consists of about 8.6 square miles of volcanic caldera with a swamp and two 2 salty freshwater lakes in the center, which contain unique itiki (eels), a local delicacy.
This island is excellent way to get away from 'civilization.' Visit the caves, the cemetery and the fortress at 'Te Pare' where the original inhabitants would hide from the invaders.

Like the other raised atolls, Mitiaro has a close reef, no large beaches, a ring of makatea and a centre of more fertile land.
Every island is in some way distinctive, however, and in Mitiaro's case its singularity lies within the two lakes - Rotonui (Big Lake) and Rotoiti (Small Lake) - which are a little way inland on the eastern side of the island.
Eels always return to the sea to spawn, so it can be assumed that the itiki of Mitiaro find their way to the surrounding sea through subterranean channels.
