Dedicated to the group's 20th anniversary, "The Mitki Write a Letter to an Oligarch" is Shagin's largest canvas to date, and shows a group of 17 Mitki artists, including Shagin, gathered around a low table in what appears to be a boiler room.
While the Mitki no longer suffer the frequent police raids that plagued them in the late Soviet period, they continue to address questions of social injustice in their humorous, eccentric manner.

The leader of the MITKI group of artists in St. Petersburg, talented and recognised worldwide artist with a strong history of exhibitions across both Europe and the USA, including the exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters in May 2000 in New York and Art 2002 in London.
The book was illegal for a few years, until the actual end of Communism (Perestroika did not happen overnight!) People printed the text on their typewriters, 5 copies in one go (Russian Samisdat), and he became a famous writer without ever being published.
Meanwhile he wrote another book, "Mitki", which helped to discover their real identity to the whole generation of young Russians.

In the 1980s and early 90s Mitki was seen as anti-state by the Soviet government.
Exhibitions held outdoors for want of a venue were flattened by bulldozers, artists were arrested by the KGB and meetings were banned, and when they couldn't be banned they were controlled.
Natasha, now in her late 40s, is originally from St Petersburg in Russia, and although not part of Mitki the group, she says, "We were in the same city at the same time and doing basically the same things".

Associated with beer and hippies and enjoying a large following, the Mitki have managed to seep into the mainstream, but the same cannot be said of Lukomnikov, whose poetry is not only still marginal, but too varied to be characterized.
His paintings can be childlike, with inscriptions of meaningless puns like "Kitayets kita yest" f which can mean either "the Chinaman is a whale" or "the Chinaman eats a whale" f which appears under a painting of an Asian-looking boy eating a fish.

Well, I don't mean this as a plug at all, but I'm reading Chris Kennedy's book, Nietzsche's Horse, which is the second book out from Mitki Mitki and which I've only just received.
I'm generally very suspicious of so-called prose poems, which I suppose many of these are, but these pieces have a wonderful quality about them -- a little bit of Russel Edson and a little bit of Mark Strand.
