  MITRAL VALVE REPAIR (text)
Mitral valve repair is an open heart procedure performed by cardiothoracic surgeons to treat stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage) of the mitral valve.
Congenital mitral regurgitation may be due to a cleft mitral valve (a valve with a separation or cleft down the middle) associated with an atrial septal defect, a type of hole in the heart between the low pressure chambers or atria.
Degenerative mitral valve disease may be due to an elongation or rupture of the chordal apparatus, the "heart-strings" that support the valve normally, or due to a more generalized weakness of the valve itself such as the "floppy valve" syndrome in which all of the components of the valve are enlarged and elongated.

Heart valve repair or replacement for mitral valve regurgitation or prolapse
For instance, repair is more successful if there is limited damage to certain areas of the mitral valve flaps (leaflets) or to the tough fibers that control movement of the mitral valve leaflets (chordae tendineae).
Repair of the heart valve usually is the preferred and more common type of surgery for MVP because it is a simpler surgical procedure and has a lower risk of infection.
The decision regarding whether to repair or to replace a valve is based on many factors, including the person's general health, the condition of the damaged valve, the presence of other health conditions, and the expected benefits of surgery.

The mitral valve functions as a one-way valve between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart.
Damage to the mitral valve interferes with the normal passage of blood through the heart, and ultimately causes blood to back-up into the lungs.
The valve is tested, to ensure that it opens and closes safely, and then the left atrium of the heart is closed.

Mitral valve prolapse is a condition in which the valve (called the mitral valve) between the upper chamber (the atrium) and lower chamber (the ventricle) on the left side of the heart bulges into the upper chamber when the heart contracts.
The function of the mitral valve is to allow blood flow to occur between these two chambers during contraction of the heart, and to close off blood flow during the relaxation phase of the heart.
The best result of repair is achieved in myxomatous degeneration (noncalcific, nonrheumatic) group of patients.Mitral valve repair does not require anticoagulation per se if patient remains in normal sinus rhythem. Therefore the risk of thromboembolism (migratinig blood clot),endocarditis (valve infection), bleeding due to anticoagulation and prosthetic valve are eleminated.

Mitral valve surgery was first performed in 1960, when surgeons replaced the diseased, native valve with an artificial valve.
For the next 20 years, valve replacement was the gold standard, using either a metal, mechanical valve or a valve made from cow tissue.

Heart Info - Mitral Valve Prolapse: A Patient Guide
The most common heart valve abnormality is called Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), which affects between 5 percent and 20 percent of the population.
MVP is a condition of the mitral valve, a two-flapped heart valve between the left atrium and left ventricle.
Because of this imperfect closing, the valve itself slightly balloons back into the left atrium, sometimes causing what is known as a "click." With the flap there may sometimes be a slight backward leaking of blood (regurgitation) as well, resulting in a heart murmur.

Mitral regurgitation is a debilitating condition that occurs when the mitral valve, which allows blood to move through the heart, fails to close properly.
