Since the RA shares the same chassis as the Lancer, except for the ES model, the engine bay is still smaller than the eclipse.
It's not the depth or engine bay's distance running north and south, it's the 6g7x block running east to west.
I'm sadden a bit on it, but as long as they use the same engine mount placement w/ similar size and right way t0belt placement, miragers are creative enough to look at the possibility for a better 4 banger.

See, the dodge avenger and I believe the sebring had the 420a or a 2.5 V6 or higher 6g mitsubishi motor, which is a direct swap for the 420a.
The '90s 6G7x series was totally different than the 24v sohc 6G7x series, ou "will not" be able to transplant them over to your car without a god awful amount of moolah ($8,000+) unless you half ass it.

I have a hard time believing the whole engine wouldn't fit since the 4G94 used in the Lancer is almost identical to the 4G93 used in the Mirage, which is the same car the 4G92 was offered in.
You do have to fill some of the passages in the SOHC blocks though, so maybe that is what has to be done with the 4G9X, or maybe it has to do with the guides for the belts and pullies that makes them incompatible.
The 6G7X series is the same way, as in DOHC and SOHC are generally incompatible.
