Apart from the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter and possibly the B5N1 torpedo bomber, the other carrier based Japanese combat aircraft, like their American counterparts, were considered obsolescent and approaching replacement.

Besides their primary role as an observation aircraft Seaplanes played large part in the Japanese Navy's occupation and resupplying of garrisons on the far flung islands in the South Pacific.
Unfortunately the float plane had a tendency to porpoise on the water and directional flight stability was poor.
To solve these problems the F1M-1 was redesigned, under the designation F1M-2 a more powerful Mitsubishi Zuisei 13 fourteen cylinder engine was installed with a longer cowl, and the wings were redesigned with straight leading edges.

To confuse matters even further, a few types were known best by nicknames that had no official status.
The Mitsubishi A6M fighter, also known as the Carrier-Borne Fighter Type 0, had the official Allied codename of "Zeke", but it went down in history under the unofficial nickname used by both sides: "Zero".
The IJN also used a parallel system based on role description and year number, similar to (but independent of) the Army system.

The phrase "with nobody to see them off" refers to the base's extreme secrecy, so people other than base personnel did not see the kamikaze pilots off on their final mission.
Three types of Navy seaplanes were used in kamikaze sorties from Ibusuki: Kawanishi E7K Type 94 Reconnaissance Seaplane (24 planes, 51 men), Aichi E13A Type 0 Reconnaissance Seaplane (4 planes, 11 men), and Mitsubishi F1M Type 0 Observation Seaplane (16 planes, 25 men) [2].
The first two types normally had a crew of three men, but most of these planes flew with only two men on their kamikaze missions.
