Mittal Steel Co. said Thursday it is in negotiations to sell parts of its Weirton operations to Illinois-based Esmark Inc., the rapidly growing steel supplier that seized control of nearby Wheeling-Pittsburgh Corp. last fall.
Mittal spokesman Dave Allen would not say what assets in Weirton, across the Ohio River from Steubenville, Ohio, are being discussed, but he said a nonbinding memorandum of understanding had been signed.
Mittal has publicly said it would prefer to dispose of Weirton to resolve the antitrust concerns and has said there are least 10 potential buyers.

Approval of the merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel, which created by far the biggest steel producer of the world, was given by the U.S. Department of Justice on condition that the group divested Dofasco or activities of a similar size to avoid creating a dominant position in the U.S. market.
