Today, the part left at Cannon is called the Taft Slalom and over on Mittersil the bottom of the trail is called the Taft Meadows.
I'd LOVE a Mittersill run, but I may be teaching Saturday morning and will not know until 9:30 lineup.
In anticipation of operating Mittersill, Cannon occassionally runs a groomer across the major connector at the bottom.

The plan would be implemented over several years, and includes expansion to the neighboring Mittersil Ski Area, which has laid dormant since the early 1980's.
Acting on the plan this summer, Cannon Mountain crews cut 10 new trails partially on Mittersil and the wooded area between the two ski areas.
In addition to the new trails on Mittersil, crews also cut a new expert trail beneath the tramway line.

It was a small 'upside down' mountain - you parked at the top of the hill so the last run of the day was up the chairlift.
I've skiied Mittersill once back in the mid 90's (boy, time to make another trip) and remember taking the chair to the summit and heading right off of the lift - keep the speed up to minimize the amount of hiking before heading downhill.
One problem is that the Taft trail from the top of Cannon towards Mittersill has been closed for weeks and may be patrolled.

Rich had his first of many Kaiserschmarrns here which is a typical Austrian dish - Kaiser Franz Joseph's favourite dish of all time apparently - of chopped up pancake served with sugar, raisins and fruit compote of the season.
On our second cycling trip we decided to go westwards down the Pinzgautal towards Mittersil, a town we had passed on our postbus trip out to the Krimml waterfalls.
In total that day we cycled about 65-70 kms up and down the very scenic Tauernradweg passing the Salzach quite a few times on the way.

Juiceguy, the term backcountry can be somewhat realitive.
On Cannon Mt, you can access what used to be a ski aeria, called Mittersil.
The trails are getting a bit bushy here and there, but it's an easy "backcountry" experience without much work.

I will be fishing in at Braurup in Mittersil which is clase to Zell am See and Gmunden.
I would not recommend renting any equiptment in Europe as everything will be expensive.
