		Coordinates: 30°36′36″N, 34°48′″E Mitzpe Ramon is a local council in the Negev desert of southern Israel.
		The town is situated on the northern ridge overlooking the enormous erosion cirque known as the Ramon Crater.
		Founded in the 1950s when a busload of newly arrived Russian immigrants were unceremoniously dumped in the middle of the Negev with a few cargo containers to live in and told to found a new city, Mitzpe Ramon remains small and struggling, with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

		Ramon Crater is the world's biggest karst crater, located at the peak of Mount Negev, in the heart of Israel's Negev Desert, some 85 kilometers south of the city of Beer-Sheva.
		The only settlement in the area is the small town of Mitzpe Ramon (In Hebrew: מצפה רמון - Ramon Observation Point) located on the northern edge of the crater.
		Impressive mountains rise at the borders of the crater - Har Ramon (Mt. Ramon) in the southern end, Har Ardon (Mt. Ardon) in the northeastern end, and two beautiful table mountains - Har Marpek (Mt. Marpek), and Har Katom (Mt. Katom) are along the southern wall.

		Gradually the grey and lava fl mounds in the depths of the canyon were exploited for their ceramic clay, gypsum and glass-sand ingredients.
		Mitzpe Ramon began in 1954 as a camp for men building the highway south to Elat.

	Machtesh Ramon
		Located south of Beersheba in the Central Negev, Makhtesh Ramon is usually referred to as a crater, but it is not an impact crater from a meteorite, it is actually a "makhtesh," a valley surrounded by steep walls and drained by a single "wadi" (riverbed).
		Mount Ramon, at the southwest corner of the makhtesh, is the highest peak in the Negev (3,400 feet – 1,037 m.).
		The British paved the highway from Beersheva to Eilat, the road from Beersheva to the large Makhtesh and the "Petroleum Road" from Yeruham to Avdat and Makhtesh Ramon.

		MITZPE RAMON - Dror Gurion first fell in love with the desert as a teenager, when he attended the High School for Environmental Studies in the Sde Boker educational community, located in the heart of the Israeli south, the Negev.
		The tents were built with consideration of the direction of the wind; their openings face east, while the wind in the area usually blows from the west.

		Mitzpe Ramon itself is a small town only a few dozen years old, but the RAMON CRATER under it, is only a few hundred million years old, and stretches for many kilometers in all directions, hills and sand and rocks of many different colours, and you can go and walk wherever you want to.
		While I did do a lot of visiting to sites, and many places in and around Mitzpe Ramon, definitely more visits are in planning…(especially a visit in the rain season).
