The Miwa family has been potting in Hagi since Kanbun 3 (1663) when the first Kyusetsu (original name was Chubei Toshisada) opened a kiln under the watchful eye of the feudal lord of the area, Mohri Terumoto.
Miwa also told me that the tiny hairline on the back is common(remember the photo is up-close-enlarged) and not a concern as I also know--it's superficial and 1.5cm.long.
Miwa is one of Japan's premiere ceramic artists with a long exhibition career--his work has also been shown at many museums here including the Suntory, Yamaguchi Prefectural, East Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Uragami, and Aichi Prefectural museums.
