Analog Surround Mixing Console SRC51 and 5.1 Systems
SRC51, adt-audio's new Mixing Console for Surround Sound was designed with respect to todays use of an analog audio mixing system in a digital studio environment.
The Master Section of the SRC51 mixing Console is divided into a total of 4 different modules.
Based on this principle, it is possible to configure a very small, rack-mounted analog mixing console with 8 channels, the master and the control unit.

The cable then is plugged into the console to carry the signal from the stage to the mixing console.
Most consoles possess this capability because it is necessary for the engineer to listen to alternate mixes during a performance.
One limitation of using busses for your monitor mix is that if you assign a particular channel to a bus, you might not be able to route that signal to another bus or at least not the buss you need.

 Mixing Desks
A mixing desk, or mixing console, or console, or sound console, or sound desk, or desk, or mixer, or sound board, or whatever, can be thought as the "heart" of a sound system.
High-end mixing desks can appear with four parametric equalizer bands which allow frequency selection, boost/cut control, and a bandwidth control (where the center frequency is the frequency selected with the frequency knob), as well as a high-cut filter (a low-pass filter) and a low-cut filter (a high-pass filter).
Mixing desks can have anywhere from two to sixteen subgroups-- technically, a mixing desk with stereo outputs can be thought of having two groups, because the engineer is not required to run the mixing desk into a stereo pair.

 mixing console channel
On the right is an example of a typical mixing console input channel.
The EQ (equalization) section is used to adjust the amount of boost or cut (attenuation) for high, midrange and low frequency bands (the exact number of frequency bands varies according to the mixing console model).
The master level for Group Outputs is usually found as a separate bank of faders on the right side of the mixing console.

A Network Enabled Radio Console Architecture
Further, because the mixing and routing is performed centrally, the studio console interface is a flexible control surface that can be reconfigured in software to accommodate changing show types, shared resources and the instant recall of user preferences and settings.
The user interacts with a surface much the same as they would an actual console, but rather than changing the audio directly, their input is captured and fed to the central engine core to change levels, switch signals, etc. Control surfaces can be reconfigured quickly to accommodate different shows or user preferences.
Ideally, a mixing engine would be attached to the network and would receive the desired streams and would perform any mixing and signal processing necessary and send the result to the appropriate destinations.

The EMI TG12345 Mixing console was produced by EMI Research Laboratories, Hayes, to a design brief submitted by Abbey Road Studios.
The design was for a Transistorised ("Solid State") multi-channel mixing console to replace the 10in/4out valve (vacuum tube) mixers which had been in use at the studios since the 1950's.
The console was of a “split” design, with separate faders for microphone gain and group output level, along with separate rotary monitor level controls for each track.

Setting up EQ, compression, and other parameters for a mix from scratch can be a daunting task, so Yamaha has provided an extensive selection of presets in a range of "libraries" that can simply be selected and used unmodified, or edited to suit specific requirements.
The joystick provided for surround panning in the console's Selected Channel control section has high 128 x 128 step resolution for exceptionally smooth control, and a divergence parameter can be used to adjust the hard/phantom center ratio for each channel.
Mixing and processing parameters, as well as transport control and editing functions can be controlled directly from the 02R96 surface.

Audio Mixing Console - Part 2
There are two main types of mixing module - a stereo unit to accept the outputs of the Mic/Line modules, and a mono version for the Auxiliary sends that includes an Aux return as well (these are typically used for effects, or as a simple foldback mix).
As shown, channels 1 and 2 are switched to Mix Bus 1, channel 3 to bus 2, channels 4 and 5 to bus 4, and channel "n" to the master bus.
The virtual earth mixing buses are particularly succeptible to magnetic flux leakage from transformers, and a separate supply will eliminate this problem, and helps to keep the weight down as well.

The features of the master or Control section of the mixing console generally act as output level controls for their designated output connectors, one exception being the Aux Return master(s) since those jacks are inputs.
When a console is properly adjusted it is possible to mix entirely from the Sub Group faders which each control entire groups of input channels.

You can program the console's settings using the M7CL Editor on a computer in your hotel room or on the tour bus – wherever you don't have access to the console itself – and simply transfer those settings from your USB memory to the console at the venue.
