Visits to Miyajima are also possible from downtown Hiroshima or from Nishi-Hiroshima Station of the Hiroden (Hiroshima Electric Railway Co.) or by car (30 min.) from Hiroshima.
Miyajima first took on a semblance of its modern appearance when the island figured in the ambitions of Taira-no-Kiyomori, one of Japan's strong men of the 12th Century.
It was Kiyomori who really put Miyajima on the map, and the shrine he built in about 1148 AD, the labor of ten years, is the same one standing today.

In Counter Line, as in his other works, Miyajima disrupts the notion of time as a linear, universal truth and replaces it with a recognition of the arbitrary, fluid nature of time.
For the artist, technology is not in opposition to nature, which contradicts a widely held view that sees the Japanese avant-garde as moving away from nature in favor of technology.
In fact, Miyajima points out that his work incorporates the natural phenomenon of electricity as well as technological advances, such as the LED and the integrated circuit chip.

 Torii at Miyajima
I visited Miyajima near Hiroshima shortly before leaving Japan in 1998, and when I went there, I was surprised to see that the Torii, the ritual gateway leading to the Shinto shrine of Utsukushima, stands on a very shallow beach, and as it was low tide, it was completely exposed.
Having seen this famous gateway in unnumerable prints standing in deep waters of the Inland Sea, it came as a shock to realize that the waters were not particularly deep at all!
