Miyajima (宮島町; -cho) is a town located on Itsukushima Island (sometimes referred to as Miyajima Island) in Saeki District, Hiroshima, Japan.
The town of Miyajima is connected to the mainland by regular ferries to Miyajima-guchi, and less frequent ferries to the city of Hiroshima.

Miyajima is reached by a 10 minute ferry ride from the mainland, and is one of Japan's most sacred sites.
Apart from a small village near the ferry terminal, the island is covered with virgin forest; tame deer roam freely around the streets and monkeys inhabit the tops of the hills.
Near to the dome is a museum containing information and artefacts from Hiroshima which are both moving and horrifying: two things which stood out were a partly melted child's tricycle, and a piece of pavement with the shadow of an individual permanently etched on its surface.

The main reason I wanted to visit Hiroshima was to see the annual memorial ceremony at Peace Park on the anniversary of the A-bomb explosion, August 6.
I was pleased to hear that Hiroshima's government had finally granted permission for this memorial to be resituated inside the Park.
He also took me to several temples where he would knock on a door off to the side of the main altar and we would be admitted to the head priest's quarters where we'd have tea.

It was a short walk from there to the ferry terminal where we caught a ferry over to Miyajima.
This was not a ferry, but a high speed boat that went directly to the Hiroshima Prince Hotel where we were staying that night.

Ojii had us flying down there into Hiroshima airport, and then we took a tour which took us out to Miyajima and the shrine there.
