The islands are administratively divided into Satsunan Islands to the north, belonging to Kagoshima Prefecture, and Ryūkyū Shotō to the south, belonging to Okinawa Prefecture, Japan (Yoron Island is the southernmost island of the Satsunan Islands).
The Ryukyu Islands are recognized by ecologists as a distinct subtropical moist broadleaf forest ecoregion.
The flora and fauna of the islands have much in common with Taiwan, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia, and are part of the Indomalaya ecozone.

Regarding the remote islands of Miyako and Yaeyama, Japanese culture was introduced mainly by immigrants from Okinawa Island.
With the abolishment of feudalism and the removal of social and cultural constraints at the end of the 19th century, people in Miyako and Yaeyama were eventually given an opportunity to raise their social status.
As I shall demonstrate, Miyako and Yaeyama found in the Japanese culture a device to present themselves as "modern" and "civilized." They eagerly employed the concept of "Japanese-ness" while negotiating their status in Okinawan society.
