Located in the city of Hirara on Miyakojima Island in the Okinawa Prefecture, the first phase of construction for the facility will commence in early March of 2001 with completion scheduled for the end of July of the same year.
Named the Nippon Paint Miyakojima Weathering Test Center, this facility is designed to test painted/coated samples or actual structures for paint/coating's weathering resistance by exposing them to outdoor conditions such as sunlight and rain.
Miyakojima Island is located at a similar latitude and shares comparable climatic conditions to that of Florida in the U.S.A. -- home to the facility that sets the global standard for weathering tests.

In an unusual historic event, Mayor Alan Arakawa announced today that he has transmitted to the County Council a proposed resolution to change the title of an established sister-city relationship from Miyako Island to Miyakojima City located in the Miyako Islands of Okinawa, Japan.
The resolution was initiated by Arakawa upon the receipt of a letter from the Honorable Akira Ishimine stating that on October 1, 2005 Miyakojima City was created from the merging of the Miyako Island cities of Hirara City, Gusukube, Irabu, Ueno and Shimoji.
If approved by the Council, the resolution will result in the County of Maui formally changing its Sister-City relationship name from Miyako Island to Miyakojima City.
