  Experiments with Flying Cars
One of the most famous flying cars is Aerocar's Aerocar, built in 1946, which was called a "roadable aircraft." Designed by Moulton Taylor, the Aerocar had wings that folded up, allowing the car to be easily converted into flight mode by a single person in just five minutes.
The flying car was a true hybrid, with the front half modeled on a Ford Pinto and the back half consisting of a Cessna Skymaster plane.
Also, while most flying cars require a pilot's license, designers are working on a very interesting feature for the FSC-1: a new satellite-navigation "hands free" flight system would allow users to travel from airport to airport, eliminating the need for a pilot's license (upon FAA approval).

 Lying Cars
While there have been a number of Flying Cars through history, there have been an even greater number of ill-fated or even bogus flying car proposals: "Lying Cars." But you are guaranteed to see a flying car at least annually on at least one of the low-brow technology magazines, like Popular Science or Popular Mechanics.
For an aircraft to be roadable, and yet fly, it would need to be lighter than, and have as low a frontal cabin area as, for instance, the Honda or Toyota hybrid cars currently popular-in-theory among those earnest young environmentalists who actually drive '82 Buicks with bad piston rings.
This postwar flying car was also pursuing certification when the implosion of the market, and bad publicity from a non-fatal crash, pulled the rug out from under the project.

When I was a kid, about this time, I had one of those SSP cars (YouTube link to commercial for the "Smash-Up Derby" version) with the massive wheel in the middle; you inserted a geartoothed strip and pulled it out hard, like a ripcord, and the wheel would spin hard.
All the cars in that film were AMCs (formerly Rambler), which by that time was almost a joke brand that survived mostly through government fleet sales before briefly becoming Eagle and eventually being purchased by Chrysler who really only wanted their Jeep division.

 sports history - Ford Pinto
The car's design was conventional, with unibody construction, a longitudinally-mounted engine in front driving the rear wheels through either a manual or automatic transmission and live axle rear end.
Through the production run of the model, it became a focus of a major scandal when it was discovered that the car's design allowed its fuel tank to be easily damaged in the event of a rear end collision which often resulted in deadly fires and explosions.
Schwartz argues that the car was no more fire-prone than other cars of the time, and that the supposed 'smoking gun' document showing Ford's callousness actually referred to the auto industry in general rather than the Pinto specifically.
