The town in which I lived is called Mizuho-cho in Shimane prefecture.
Even some Japanese don't know where Shimane prefecture is located, but they recognize the name from the folklore associated with it.
Shimane literally means "Root of the Island." Japanese folklore tells the story of a god who pulled extra land from the Korean Penninsula using a huge rope and made Shimane Penninsula.

Just over the border in Shimane-ken, Mizuho Highland is probably Hiroshima-ites' favorite ski area.
There are 13 courses totaling 17km, the longest of which is 3600m, the lifts are good, if a little pricey lifts, and there is a decent variety of places to eat.
Take the Hamada Expressway to the Mizuho exit, follow the signs for the 2.5km to the resort.

Human Biology: Geographic differences in seasonal variation of mean birth weight in Japan(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Table 3 presents the results of the correlation analysis between MBW and MGP and between MBW and MBW sub 40 from January 1979 to December 1983 for each prefecture.
Only four cases (Tokyo female first births, Shimane female subsequent births, and Kochi first births of both sexes) do not show any statistically significant correlation between MBW and MGP at the 5% level.
This methodological problem could have affected the stability of the statistical procedure, especially for prefectures with small populations (e.g., Shimane and Kochi).
These events have been translated from the "Doki Doki Shimane" a free quarterly guide to Shimane.

The same, however, cannot be said of Mutsu Mizuho, because so little information about his background exists today.
Originally known as Takada Mizuho, Mutsu was a graduate of Keio University.
The 1930 publication entitled, "Kenpo Gaisetsu," by Mutsu Mizuho and Miki Nisaburo (presently being translated into English by Patrick & Yuriko McCarthy) mentions that Mutsu went to Okinawa to visit Yabu Kentsu in summer of 1929 with Miki.

Forsooth, my masters, there had I been but a music to blow up, 'And let us go look on these villeins,' said he; and faces turned hitherward; forsooth, I got to my horse, and led him out green roads; neither was I seen or chased.
Now I am living in a wee village called Mizuho in Shimane prefecture.
It's big time festival season because the bounty of Shimane is being reaped for consumption.
It's going to be amazing, a lot of work, and perhaps a wee bit of a challenge out here in the sticks, but we have a great group of women from around the world who want to be involved.

This place is not in the Japan top 10, but it a good choice for people who want a good day out and live in the region.
As a past season pass holders of Naeba (Niigata), Nozawa Onsen(Nagano) and Mammoth Mountain, Mizuho may be smaller than other areas close to Hiroshima, but for a one-day commute it's great.

After finishing up my last edition of "The Shimanean", this summer issue has produced my own set of "fireworks." By the time you will have received this in the mail, my two-year tenure as Coordinator for International Relations and editor of the Shimanean at the Shimane International Center will almost be complete.
At times it seemed long, at times it seemed short, nevertheless, providing English information and news "about Shimane, for Shimane" was a big challenge.
As always, I would like to applaud my dedicated writers and contributors for their hard work and loyalty.
