Mizuho Corporate Bank, one of three banking units of Mizuho Financial Group, is seeking to partner with both Shinhan Bank and Korea Development Bank, becoming the first Japanese megabank to invest in a major South Korean financial group, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, without citing sources.
Mizuho plans to sign agreements on a capital and business tie-up with Shinhan and an operational tie-up with Korea Development Bank as early as the end of September, and officially announce the deals after obtaining approval from financial authorities in each country, the report said.
Mizuho Financial Group, Japan's second-biggest bank by assets, said in July that its profit rose 33 percent in the fiscal first quarter as cost-cutting efforts and stock market gains lifted the company's performance.

Japan's big four banks are on track to post their first annual profits in three years after Mizuho Financial Group, which ran up the nation's biggest ever corporate loss last year, led the way in reporting half year profits.
Mizuho Financial Group reported a net profit of 255 billion yen -- more than double its initial forecast -- while Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group posted a net profit of 140 billion yen.
Mizuho said it expects a profit of 360 billion for the full year.
