  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Mizzen
Most types of ship with two masts would have a main-mast and a smaller mizzen-mast, the exception being the two masted schooner which has a fore-mast and main-mast.
On a two-masted vessel with the mainmast forward and a much smaller second mast, such as a ketch, or particularly a yawl, the terms mizzen and jigger are synonymous.
Some two-masted schooners have masts of identical size, but the aftmost is still referred to as the main-mast, and normally has the larger course.

Mizzen Mast set up a clear lead but Chichicastenango’s stamina came into play in the last furlong and the Juddmonte colt went down honorably by 1½ lengths over a distance which was probably beyond his best.
Mizzen Mast was evidently an even better horse in his native America than he had been in France, perhaps because he was ridden differently.
Mizzen Mast has no inbreeding in the first five generations and his pedigree is free of virtually all the major influences, such as Raise A Native, Mr Prospector, Northern Dancer, Hail To Reason, Bold Ruler, In Reality, Damascus and Buckpasser.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Blue at the Mizzen (novel)
FACTOID # 180: Armenia was the first nation to formally adopt Christianity, and today has one of the few Christian cultures to still sacrifice animals on Sunday.
Blue at the Mizzen (1999) is a novel by Patrick O'Brian, the twentieth (and final) book in the Aubrey–Maturin series.
The novel is experimental in that it is not a tale of identifying the killers—they have openly announced their intentions—but is instead a description of how and why the bystanders and participants handle their parts in the crime.

Mizzen's name comes from the sailing term for the shorter second mast on a two-masted sailboat.
The shorter aft mast is called the mizzen mast, and the sail hung on it, is called the mizzen.
Mizzen's parents have sailed most all of their lives, so she will be getting her sea-legs in a hurry.

Mizzenmasts and mizzen sails - ketches and yawls - are not in vogue.
Another important benefit of a mizzen sail is than it enables the boat to carry the same sail area as its sloop- rigged sisters while reducing the size of the mainsail.
This sail is like a free-luffed jib or drifter except that its head hoists to the mizzen masthead (instead of the main masthead) and its tack secures just abaft the base of the main mast, or perhaps to the windward grabrail.

Quite remarkably he first pointed out that the mizzen boom was so much lower than the main boom that little if any power had been derived form the foot panels of the sail originally, as the spoilage from the main and coach-roof caused much of the negative turbulence effects on up-wind points.
For the sailor faced with a long, light air, broad reach or run while using the mizzen this is easier accomplished with a "loose-footed" mizzen by easing the outhaul slightly, adding a bit of pressure to the topping lift and creating a centralized chord, to maximize the down-wind performance/power of the mizzen.
The more sophisticated/expensive installation of a mizzen traveler allows the mizzen to be similarly "twisted" by setting the sheeting 'lead-point' sufficiently upwind, with an eased sheet, allowing the upper reaches of the sail to best utilize the light, and "cleaner" air, aloft when sailing off-wind without the costly chafing.

 Mizzen twist?
Hello, friends: in sailing my new Nimble 24, in stronger winds, I notice that the mizzen mast has a tendency to twist: I noticed this when I started hearing a sound and thought it was coming from the tiller.
It was: the metal bar to which the tiller attaches was rubbing against one of the cleats on the lower side of the mizzen mast, due to the mizzen mast having twisted or turned on its axis.
Solution(???): drilling a small hole in one of the wooden supports that hold the mizzen mast in place, and into the metal of the mizzen mast, into which some sort of pin could be inserted and also removed, when desired.
